Travel to China and Thailand With This Asian Studies Summer Program!

Asian Studies is hosting a summer program to China and Thailand from May 13th to June 1st!

Details: The program will explore the culture, religion, and history of the “Golden Triangle,” the border area shared by Thailand, Laos, Burma, and China, in their social and environmental context. This will fulfill students’ study abroad requirements, even though it is just a couple of days short of a three-week requirement.

Courses Offered: There will be two courses, for a total of six credit hours, offered:

  • ASST 240: Food Culture and the Environment of the Golden Triangle (Dr. Piotr Gibas)
  • CHST 240: Culture and Religion of Thailand and Yunnan, China (Dr. Lei Jin)

Earn HONS colloquia credit studying healthcare and politics in the UK this summer

Travel to England and Scotland this summer to study advancements in healthcare and upheaval in European politics while taking an Honors colloquium course this summer.

Details: Travel to London and Edinburgh during the Summer I term (June 5 – July 5). Students on the trip can take HONS 250: The Future of Humanity in a Technological Tomorrow, a colloquia course that looks at how technological advances like AI and genetic engineering are impacting developments in healthcare and beyond.

Benefits:

  • Take a 3 credit Honors colloquium course to satisfy your Honors requirement.
  • You also have the option to take POLI 359: Remapping a Europe in Crisis.
  • Visit with experts and government officials in England and Scotland.
  • Scholarships are available through CIE and students may be eligible for Honors Summer Enrichment Program funding.

Gothic Literature in London: A horrible way to spend Summer 2024

Spend a month this summer exploring gloomy gothic literature in London and Edinburgh and earn Honors immersed credit.

The Trip: June 26 – July 31 through an affiliate program taught through USM’s British Studies study abroad program.

The Classes: Explore how British culture uses Gothic themes to express fears, anxieties, and misgivings about gender & sexuality, nation & empire, race & class. We’ll also visit the gloomy moors and dark city streets where these stories are set.

Benefits:

  • Earn six total credits of gen-ed humanities ENGL credit.
  • Approved for Honors immersed credit.
  • Explore the cities, villages, museums, theaters, parks, and graveyards of Great Britain.

Three Weeks in Greece with the Sea Turtles? Yes Please!

The Center for Civic Engagement is offering a 2024 Maymester Alternative Break trip to Greece focused on wildlife rehabilitation and sustainable Tourism.

Alternative Break? An immersive educational travel experience that connects students with thought leaders and community organizations who are serving their communities in forward-thinking ways.

The Maymester Trip: Travel to Zakynthos, Greece from May 14 – June 4, 2024, and support sea turtle conservation efforts on the island. During the trip participants take part in strong direct service, educational programing, daily reflection, and leadership development.

CofC in Havana, Cuba (Semester-long program, Spring 2024)

The island of Cuba blends Caribbean, African, and European cultures, creating a diverse and inspiring environment for students to study during the Spring semester. Learn more about the program.

  • Take courses with LACS, POLI, and SPAN credit
  • Further your Spanish language skills with a course taught in Spanish
  • Live with a Cuban family and take weekend excursions to explore the island

CofC Spring Break in Mexico: Past and Present (Spring Break 2024)

Take HIST 261: Mexico Past and Present for a unique opportunity to become fully immersed in Mexican history and culture. Learn more about the program.

  • Explore museums, archeological sites, and experience firsthand the country’s rich culture
