The opportunity: The SMART scholarship offers STEM students who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. a full scholarship, internships, annual stipends, and guaranteed post-grad employment with the Department of Defense.

The benefits: The webinar will help interested students review eligibility requirements, program benefits, and gain tips and insight into the 2022 application.

Applications for the Spring ’23 SC Washington Semester Program are now open

The South Carolina Washington Semester Program (WSP) gives students in universities and colleges across the state of South Carolina the opportunity to spend a semester working and taking classes in Washington D.C., gaining valuable experience while earning academic credit toward their degrees.

The opportunity: Live/Learn/Work. Students live in a historic Capital Hill neighborhood, explore the city through group excursions, all while taking 15 credit hours.

  • 9 credit hours are applied towards a full-time internship in congressional, executive, judicial or private sector offices, which can be applied towards your Honors Immersed requirement.

Great fit for: Many CofC Honors students have participated and thrived in this program over the years, with backgrounds ranging from political science to economics to international studies to public health. Participants get firsthand experience with the political process, obtaining skills that will help prepare them for careers in virtually any sphere.

Scholarships available: The program allocates support for students who demonstrate financial need and awards over $10,000 each year in scholarships.

URCA funding available to support student research and research presentations

The College’s office of Undergraduate Research and Activities (URCA) has multiple funding resources to help students planning to conduct or present research during the upcoming school year.

Upcoming deadline: The first round of applications for RPG (Research Presentation Grants) and MAYS (Major Academic Year Support) are due August 29.

How these funds help: RPG funds help with travel costs for those presenting research at a conference, while MAYS grants help to cover student research expenses for projects carried out during the academic year.

Launchpad for Success (LP4S) offers leadership and career development for AALANA students

Launchpad for Success (LP4S) is a two-year career development program that emphasizes mentoring, financial literacy, professional/personal development and experiential learning.

Target Audience: Rooted in equity, Launchpad is designed to create meaningful career pathways for incoming freshmen and rising sophomores – especially those who identify as African American, Latino/a, Asian American and Native American (AALANA).

Program Benefits: Workshops focused on financial literacy, career development and leadership development; access to experiential learning opportunities (e.g. internships, on/off campus employment, research or study abroad); support on multiple fronts, including the Office of Institutional Diversity, academic advising and peer coaching

U.S. Department of State: CLS SPARK

The U.S Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Spark Program is a pilot initiative providing virtual opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

CLS Spark provides American students the access and opportunity to start their language learning journeys, even when these critical languages may not be offered on their campuses. Selected participants will spend an academic year learning either Arabic, Chinese, or Russian through online classes and activities facilitated by native speakers at a host institution abroad.

Key Benefits:

  • $300 stipend
  • Online language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences over the course of two 11-week terms
  • Language gains certified with the widely recognized ACTFL OPI test
  • Automatic consideration as CLS Program semifinalists for the summer overseas 2023 CLS Program to continue their language study

Develop Your Professional, Research, and Leadership Skills with the Market Scholars Program

Market Process Scholars is a multi-year mentoring program for exceptional College of Charleston undergraduate students. The Market Process Scholars program develops professional, research, and leadership skills through exposure to a broad range of successful academic scholars and business executives representing diverse fields of study, organizational cultures, leadership styles, and measures of personal and organizational success.

Environmental Data Initiative Fellowship Program

All students with programming experience and a passion for the ecological sciences are encouraged to apply for the Environmental Data Initiative Fellowship Program. This program will run from June 13 to August 19. 

Accepted Fellows will receive training in ecological data management and gain hands-on experience through participation in data preparation and publishing with scientists and information managers from specific host research projects.

This opportunity does have the option of remote participation, and accepted fellows will receive a $6,000 stipend.
