$5000 Scholarship for Black Students Pursuing a Career in the Tech Industry

Reason One, a Charleston-based digital agency, is offering a $5000 scholarship to support Black/African American/African-descent women in technology and digital-related programs.

The Program: The Reason One Mentorship & Scholarship Program awards scholarship and mentorship opportunities to Black students who are enrolled or recently accepted in a digital-related program, pursuing or with plans to pursue a career in the tech industry.

The Award: Three students will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards application fees, textbooks, and other expenses, plus one year of mentorship and professional development support from Reason One team members

  • Go Deeper: This program is explicitly focused on removing the systemic, financial, and socio-economic barriers that Black students encounter in tech career paths.

South Carolina Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting

The South Carolina Academy of Sciences (SCAS) will be having their Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at MUSC.

The Annual Meeting provides a venue for Graduate and Undergraduate Students (SCAS) to present their research and win scholarships.

Dr. Lori McMahon, MUSC Vice President for Research, will be the Plenary Speaker for the 2023 Annual Meeting.

Abstracts are being accepted until Friday, February 24, 2023, from Undergraduate and Graduate Students for Oral and Poster Presentations.

Cougar Changemaker Project Submissions

The Changemaker Program aims to empower students to create innovative sustainability initiatives.

Each semester the Center for Sustainable Development provides guidance and funding up to $5,000 to bring these sustainability ideas to life! Past projects have included a composting program for the dorms, new rain barrels, the new solar pavilion located behind the library, and the hammocks located at river green.

The call for Interest Forms is now open and due Friday, February 17. Students are highly encouraged to submit this form as they will be assigned a case manager to help them turn their idea into a full proposal that is due April 7.

If not submitted, students are still welcome to turn in their proposals on the assigned date.

Student Research Scholar/Research Assistant in the Learning and Memory Research Lab at MUSC

The Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Health Sciences & Research, Integrative Neuromodulation and Recovery (iN*R) Lab is currently looking for a team member who will primarily work on a newly funded project involving electroencephalography (EEG) and non-invasive brain stimulation to study memory mechanisms in healthy volunteers of older age.

Applicants will contribute to data acquisition, analysis, and implementation of a data management infrastructure following international standards and recommendations for open science and ethical data-sharing practices.

Existing or very strong interest in developing experience in EEG data acquisition and signal processing methods is preferred. Likewise, programming skills (MATLAB, Python, R) and experience with machine learning methods are a big advantage but not mandatory.

2023 Student Entrepreneur of the Year

The Center for Entrepreneurship is looking for applications for the College of Charleston “2023 Student Entrepreneur of the Year.” The winner will be recognized on April 12th at the Tommy Baker Entrepreneurship Hour and receive an award of $1,000 to help grow their business.

Any full-time enrolled student at the College of Charleston is invited to apply by the Sunday, February 12, 2023 deadline.

Additionally, Student entrepreneurs are also eligible to join the Founders Club to help students launch and grow their enterprises by bringing in noted entrepreneurs for mentoring and advice. The Founders Club’s next meeting is this Wednesday, February 1 from 5:00-6:00 in Beatty 120 (the Impact X room on the ground floor of the School of Business).

Awards Available for Semester/Summer Abroad Trips

To support increasing student interest and participation in public service, especially foreign service and/or globally focused civil service internships, awards will be given to students who secure experiential learning opportunities during summer or semester abroad programs.

Students will be given a $3,000-$5,000 internship award for programs that directly relate to public service, with preference for foreign or civil service broadly conceived.

Recipients will be able to apply their work experience to myriad endeavors and will gain a distinguished advantage amongst their peers because of their direct exposure to global issues.

Students will submit an application and be selected by a committee comprised of LCWA faculty. The selection committee will recommend award winners to the Dean of LCWA, who will make the final selections.

Major/Minor: major is open; preference for minor in LCWA

Credits: how many credits, if any, are being earned through the internship and in what subject area

References: the names of two faculty members who are willing to provide recommendations

Essay: one short essay with a brief description of the internship (include the exact name of the company/organization, its duration, and location), a description of how the internship fits in and is important for your career goals, and why this award is critical to your participation in the internship.

Budget: include an estimated budget of expenses related to the internship and the amount needed for your participation (consider items, such as housing and utilities; food; transportation/travel; appropriate work attire)
