Numerous opportunities with the US State Department

Opportunities abound with the US Department of State! Applications are now open for the following:

The Department offers scholarships for students to intern and study abroad, as well as government internships, graduate fellowships, and career opportunities.

Internships

Students can apply to the Virtual Student Federal Service during the month of July. While this is an unpaid opportunity, students participate part-time for a maximum of 10 hours per week during the duration of the academic year. This year, we have over 500 internship projects with federal agencies across the federal government.

We also offer the ten-week Student Internship Program in the spring, summer, and fall for students with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4-point scale. They currently earn $18.36 per hour and also receive transportation to and from the internship site and housing. Students generally apply 7-8 months ahead of their internship to provide enough time to get their security clearances. Applications for the Summer 2024 internship will open in the early fall, generally in late September.

Fellowships/Scholarships/Awards

The fellowships listed below require a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA on a 4-point scale, and encourage applications from women and groups that are underrepresented in the Department of State:

The Pickering and Rangel Fellowships provide tuition assistance for a master's degree, a stipend, and two summer internships, and in return, Fellows sign a contract with the Department of State at the end of their studies to serve as Foreign Service Officers for five years. The application cycle for both of these programs ends in late September.

Last year, we started the Clarke Diplomatic Security Fellowship. Like the fellowships above, students get tuition assistance, two internships, and a stipend, and after students get their master's degree, they sign a contract to serve as Diplomatic Security Special Agents. Candidates must pass a Physical Readiness Test. The application cycle will open around July 18 and close in late September.

We also offer the Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship. This fellowship can either fund the junior and senior year of bachelor's study, or two years of graduate study in an IT-related major. Again, internships, tuition assistance, and a stipend are part of the fellowship. FAIT Fellows sign a contract to serve as Information Management Specialists.

We offer the Gilman Scholarship to students receiving Pell Grants to fund internships and study abroad, and, the Gilman-McCain Scholarship is available for students who are adult children of active duty service members and who are receiving Title IV financial aid.

We offer the Critical Language Scholarship to students who want a summer immersive experience in one of fourteen languages, including Russian, Mandarin, and Arabic.

Full-Time Positions

We are also hiring for full-time positions abroad with the Foreign Service and domestically with the Civil Service.

Study at the American University of Ciaro

Study at the American University of Cairo. This program is supported by a generous scholarship from the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs.

Applications for this exchange program are currently open for the Fall 2023 semester or Fall 2023-Spring 2024

Funding (up to $7,000 per semester; see attached flyer) is available for study in Cairo, Egypt, at the American University of Cairo.

Study a semester or full year in the city of the pyramids and pharaohs. To apply for funding,see the links in the attached flyer.

Applications are due April 15, 2023.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

Are you looking for an exciting post-graduation opportunity? Would you like to live abroad for a year?

Through its variety of grants, the Fulbright program offers students the opportunity to work, study, and live in another country for up to one year after graduation in one of the over 140 Fulbright partner countries. A Fulbright can be a great way to begin graduate study, continue research, or pursue a meaningful gap year experience.

Students pursuing a Fulbright must have completed their undergraduate degree by the start of the Fulbright grant period and select one of the opportunities listed below.

English Teaching Assistantship: Teach English to students ranging in age from pre-k to college while engaging with the local community.

Open Study: Pursue a master’s degree in one of the many available one-year degree programs, including through a number of field-specific grants.

Open Research: Propose a year-long research project on the topic of your choice in any of the Fulbright countries or pursue one of the field-specific grants in the Arts, Business, or STEM fields.

$5000 Scholarship for Black Students Pursuing a Career in the Tech Industry

Reason One, a Charleston-based digital agency, is offering a $5000 scholarship to support Black/African American/African-descent women in technology and digital-related programs.

The Program: The Reason One Mentorship & Scholarship Program awards scholarship and mentorship opportunities to Black students who are enrolled or recently accepted in a digital-related program, pursuing or with plans to pursue a career in the tech industry.

The Award: Three students will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards application fees, textbooks, and other expenses, plus one year of mentorship and professional development support from Reason One team members

  • Go Deeper: This program is explicitly focused on removing the systemic, financial, and socio-economic barriers that Black students encounter in tech career paths.

Applications for the Fall ’23 SC Washington Semester Program are now open

The South Carolina Washington Semester Program (WSP) gives students in universities and colleges across the state of South Carolina the opportunity to spend a semester working and taking classes in Washington D.C., gaining valuable experience while earning academic credit toward their degrees.

The opportunity: Live/Learn/Work. Students live in a historic Capital Hill neighborhood, explore the city through group excursions, all while taking 15 credit hours.

  • 9 credit hours are applied towards a full-time internship in congressional, executive, judicial or private sector offices, which can be applied towards your Honors Immersed requirement.

Great fit for: Many CofC Honors students have participated and thrived in this program over the years, with backgrounds ranging from political science to economics to international studies to public health. Participants get firsthand experience with the political process, obtaining skills that will help prepare them for careers in virtually any sphere.

Scholarships available: The program allocates support for students who demonstrate financial need and awards over $10,000 each year in scholarships.

Funded Summer Internship with MUSC’s Dept. of Surgery through the PASS Program

The PASS (Pipeline for Aspiring Surgical Students) Program provides summer internships with the MUSC Department of Surgery.

The Opportunity: The PASS Program provides up to three Honors interns with an immersive 10-week summer experience focused on laboratory and clinical research and designed to prepare students for a career in academic medicine, all under the mentorship of Department of Surgery faculty.

Great Fit For: Aspiring surgeons / Future medical scientists / those thinking about pursuing an MD/PhD or MD/MS and looking to bolster their application credentials

Get Funded: Students accepted into the PASS Program also participate in the Honors Summer Enrichment Program, which includes funding of up to $4000 to support their PASS internship.

PASS interns will spend 10 weeks immersed in laboratory and clinical research, all under the mentorship of Department of Surgery faculty members. Potential opportunities for research include…

  • Transplant Immunology and Surgical outcomes, specifically focused on developing novel technologies and therapies to promote organ tolerance in transplantation in the Lee Patterson Allen Transplant Immunobiology Laboratory or outcomes research in the Transplant Clinical Research Core
  • Regenerative medicine, specifically relating to biomedical implants, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and 3D printing and visualization
  • Surgical Oncology research, both clinical and basic research investigating mechanisms behind cancer development and prevention and/or outcomes of therapeutics in patients
  • Cardiovascular research, focusing on basic mechanisms preventing cardiovascular disease and correlating clinical outcomes research
  • Clinical outcomes research within the Surgical Outcomes and Innovation Network at MUSC Dept. of Surgery (SORIN) and in GI surgery and general surgery within the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital Patient population

Internship Requirements:

  • Commit to working full-time (40 hours/week) for 10-weeks (exact dates will be determined based on the lab you work with)
  • Apply for and participate in the Honors Summer Enrichment Program, including pre- and post-summer workshops and cohort activities
  • Present at the annual Perry V. Halushka Research Day in November ‘23

Funding:

PASS Interns will participate simultaneously in the Honors Summer Enrichment Program, which will provide them with a stipend for living expenses up to $4000 (participation in the Honors Summer Enrichment Program is required of all PASS interns).

Who Should Apply:

This opportunity is ideal for aspiring medical scientists considering a career in academic medicine (not just in surgical fields). For those thinking about pursuing an MD/PhD or MD/MS, this is a great chance to gain practical experience and bolster your application credentials.

To be considered, applicants must be a rising junior or rising senior currently in good standing within the Honors College.

Applications are to be completed using the PASS Program application portal online. To complete your application you will be asked to…

  • Upload an up-to-date professional resume or CV
  • Upload a copy of your unofficial transcript
  • Write a statement of intent (500 words). Statement should discuss academic and career goals and explain, in specific and persuasive terms, the importance of the knowledge and skill gained from participation in the PASS program to academic and career development. Prior research experience should also be discussed. Note: If the student is intending to enroll in summer courses or be employed, he/she must describe how course work, employment and any other commitments will be balanced with the PASS program expectations. Students are not permitted to enroll in more than one course during the project period.

2.) Finalists for the PASS Program will be asked to submit a formal application to the Honors Summer Enrichment Program by March 15. Students who participate in the PASS program must also participate in the Honors Summer Enrichment Program. Details about that application can be found here.
