European Union Study Abroad

Interested in travelling abroad over spring break and becoming an expert on the European Union? INTL 390: European Union Studies is being offered next semester with the opportunity to travel to Brussels (and other European spots)!

The Course: Develop a deep understanding and become an expert on the European Union, one of the most interesting political, social and economic endeavors of our time, and one of the largest trading partners of the United States and South Carolina. You will travel to the heart of the European Union, Brussels, Belgium, and visit the headquarters of its executive and legislative institutions, meet with staff members and try to have high level meetings with officials of these or related institutions, take a one day trip to the magical medieval city of Bruges, home of the College of Europe, and another day trip to The Hague (Netherlands), home of the Peace Palace and the European Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation.

Details: Enjoy a discussion on how organic chemists pursue new drug discoveries and the synthesis of new organic molecules and learn about chemical synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and interpreting the organic hieroglyphics that are used to describe molecules. Dr. Barker will also explain how his lab has been developing inhibitors aimed at new treatments for depression and related medical conditions.

The Lonon Foundation is Looking for Student Volunteers!

The Lonon Foundation is a local nonprofit that helps children affected by a caregiver’s cancer diagnosis. They put on FREE monthly UPLIFT events that are either virtual or in-person to bring families together and help children cope. Volunteers assist in the set-up/breakdown of the events, prepare care packages for families, engage with children, and spread awareness.

Benefits:

  • Meaningful service hours
  • The Lonon Foundation is an Honors Engaged community partner
  • Potential for a future internship
  • Get event planning, child work, and communication experience

Great Fit For: Honors students studying psychology, education, public health, communications, or that are pre-med.

Scheduling Details: Volunteers are able to sign up for events that work best for their schedule. There is at least one UPLIFT event each month and volunteer work days scheduled throughout the semester.

Attend the 2024 NeuroIMPACT Conference on May 2nd!

The annual NeuroIMPACT Conference will be held in Charleston on May 2, 2024! This year’s theme is AI in Neuroscience: Transforming Care, Education and Collaboration. Attendees can enjoy talks and panel discussions with colleagues from other South Carolina institutions (MUSC, Clemson, USC, etc) as well as Harvard, Univ of Buffalo, George Washington, Emory, and many others.

Highlights Include:

  • Three parallel sessions covering how AI will transform care of clinical neuroscience patients, education in clinical neuroscience, and collaborations between academia, business and nonprofit entities.
  • A job fair for our trainees attended by academic institutions, Fortune 500 companies, and recruiting agencies.
  • Vendors in the AI space will be present throughout campus to allow attendees to sample technologies from VR, AR, robotics and others.
  • Community members at large, including clinical providers of all neuro-specialties, will be invited to attend. CME will be offered.

MUSC Research Opportunity in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology

Dr. Naohiro Yamaguchi’s lab in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology at MUSC is looking for a student intern to perform research for calcium signaling!

The Opportunity: This project focuses on the regulatory mechanisms of calcium release channels, called ryanodine receptors, and the functional consequence of their dysfunctional activities that leads to human muscle diseases. Students will be participating in cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry experiments including tissue cell cultures, mutant DNA construction and expression, and functional assay for the mutant Ca2+ channel activity.

Details: No previous lab experience is necessary as all training will be provided onsite. Selected students will work 10 hours per week during the semester and more (>15 hours) during the summer.

Great Fit For: Rising sophomores and juniors looking for a great opportunity to conduct independent research for their Bachelor’s Essay or Honors Immersed.

Publishing Potential: Recent students’ works have been published in the internationally recognized journal, DOI: 10.1016/j.jbc.2023.105606.

Intern With the Charleston Climate Coalition

The Charleston Climate Coalition (CCC) is looking for a part-time student intern to work with their team on finalizing and piloting implementation of their new Environmental Justice Profile!

The Internship: This position will involve working with the CCC team to help create the digital platform on Squarespace, help with gathering contact information for agencies relevant to the dimensions of the profile, and potentially attend meetings with environmental justice experts to set up piloting projects. This internship can be completed in person in Charleston or virtually if you plan to leave the Lowcountry this summer.

More Info: The Environmental Justice Profile is a digital platform for assessing and raising awareness about community exposure and vulnerability to a wide range of dimensions of environmental and social justice harms.

Great Fit For: Self-motivated and eager students who can effectively manage time and carry out responsibilities independently. This position should especially interest students who want real-life experience fighting to protect frontline communities and bring about sustainable community-based solutions.

The Opportunity: Volunteer for Mindful Move-Out from April 28th-May 2nd! The Center for Sustainable Development and their partners need all hands on deck to collect and sort the donations they receive from residence halls during Move-Out. It’s a great way to help our campus and community reduce waste (and get first dibs on free clothes, furniture, and more)!

BenefitsWorking can be counted for volunteer hours. By volunteering, participants increase their campus and community involvement and volunteers help work towards the 90% Waste Diversion metric.

About Students 4 Support: Students 4 Support & S4S+ are a highly-trained, certified group of peer volunteers who offer support for personal, social, and academic concerns, frustrations, and questions. They provide support through in-person drop-ins and texting. S4S+ are members of the Queer community who are able to meet and talk with students in the pride center.

Requirements: You must be able to submit the full application package (including three one to two-page essays) by the deadline, participate in the interview process, agree to volunteer for at least two semesters, and be able to attend all mandatory training dates:

  • Training is all day on those days, specific information will be provided to accepted members
