Ernest F. Hollings NOAA Undergraduate Scholarship Is Now Open!

Gain Hands-on, Practical Experience in NOAA Related Science

The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid ($700/week) internship at a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facility during the summer.

The internship provides scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA related science, research, technology, policy, management, and educational activities.

Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, scientific conferences where students present their research, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.

Current sophomores majoring in and conducting research in oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, including geography, physics, hydrology, and geomatics, are invited to apply.

Still need an Honors Advanced Studies course? Looking for an Honors Immersed project? Missed out on study abroad last year? Travel to Portugal this June with the Honors College!

  • Advanced Studies (HONS 390: Evidence-Based Medicine in Lisbon with Dr. Pfile) will count towards the Advanced Studies or Honors Elective credit
  • Add an Honors Immersed project (Assessing Parks and Green Space in Lisbon with Dr. Hughey) for no additional tuition cost

The Cougar Scholarship Award System is Now Open

Returning students can apply now to scholarships for the 2022/23 academic year

The College of Charleston has an online scholarship awarding system for departmental and specialty scholarships called the Cougar Scholarship Award System (CSAS). Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year are now OPEN!

CSAS is how you apply for all departmental scholarships, specialty scholarships, Alumni Association scholarships, and more! The system matches you with scholarships based on your interests and experiences, so all Honors students are encouraged to fill out an application.

To submit an application, log in to https://cofc.academicworks.com.

  • You must select “submit” on all applications within the portal to be considered for funding.
  • If you are the recipient of a renewable scholarship, please be on the lookout for a communication from your departmental liaison about additional steps to complete.

Each year, the School of Science and Math holds a research matchmaking session focusing on undergraduates potentially interested in conducting research. For those who might think finding research is a daunting task, this is a great opportunity to connect with faculty in a welcoming environment.

CofC faculty, and those from neighboring institutions and agencies (such as MUSC, SCDNR, and NOAA), who are interested in recruiting and mentoring students in research projects will be available to discuss research opportunities. Hundreds of students have been placed in labs as a result of this event.

Volunteer Opportunity with Communities in Schools

Light the Way for Students Across South Carolina

Light a luminary in celebration of National Education Week. Honors Engaged partner Communities in Schools is looking for volunteers to help set up 7500 luminary bags for an upcoming event. Statewide, CISSC is aiming to honor the nearly 20,000 students served at 34 partnering schools in seven counties. There will be 41 site coordinators helping students navigate hurdles by connecting them and their families to critical resources like food, housing, healthcare, counseling, and remote technologies. Your support will allow us to strengthen, deepen, and grow our impact across the state – lighting the way to graduation for all South Carolina students.

Where:  Riverfront Park in North Charleston

When: Sunday, November 14, Either 2-6pm or 4-7:30pm.  Folks are welcome to stay for both of course!

What:  Putting up to 7500 luminary bags together (folding side of bag down, putting sand in bag, turning on battery operated tea light and placing in the bag), arranging in a preset pattern across the park then taking them all down after the event
