Graduate Education Week 2023

The Graduate School is hosting Graduate Education Week March 20th -24th. All students are invited to attend all events to learn about Graduate School Opportunities.

Tuesday, March 21st: Poster Session – Stern Center Ballroom – 1 pm – 3 pm (open to the CofC family, alums, and community partners)

Description: The Graduate Student Research Poster Session is held annually and provides an introduction to the impressive projects and research activities currently taking place in our graduate programs. Students will showcase their projects, portfolios, or research, even if they are in the beginning stages.

Wednesday, March 22nd: Cougar Mall Recruitment Event – Cougar Mall – 9 am – 2 pm (open to public)

Description: The Graduate School will advertise and answer questions about the Graduate School as well as our graduate programs.  We will have several of our graduate programs present to answer program specific questions.

Friday, March 24th: Graduate School Information Session (for CofC undergrad students) – 3 pm – 4 pm – School of Education Alumni Center & Graduate/Undergraduate Mixer (for CofC undergrad/grad students) – 4 pm – 6 pm – School of Education Alumni Center

Description: The Graduate School will host an informational session geared towards undergraduate, CofC students interested in pursuing our graduate school.  The mixer is designed to connect undergraduate and graduate students.

RSVPs are not required for the “open to” events, but anyone interested in attending any event can reach out to me or gradstud@cofc.edu with any questions.  Food will be served!

Paid Research Opportunity with the Hart Lab

An NIH-funded research project here in Charleston is looking for a student research assistant.

The research: Investigating microplastic and phthalate exposure in wild bottlenose dolphins to understand how humans can impact the marine environment.

The Opportunity: Student researchers will participate in fieldwork with the project lead (Dr. Leslie Hart, Public Health), assist with sample preparation (including fish dissection), assist a graduate student with laboratory analyses of fish and bottlenose dolphin samples, perform literature searches and reviews, curate databases, and assist with statistical analyses and the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations.

  • This is a paid ($11/hr) year-long opportunity (with the potential to last for several years); students will dedicate ~10 hours weekly during the academic year and 20 hours weekly during the summer.

Research opportunity:

I am seeking a research assistant to help with a study that will investigate microplastic and phthalate exposure in wild bottlenose dolphins and their prey.  Undergraduate students involved in this study will participate in fieldwork with the project lead (Dr. Leslie Hart, Public Health), assist with sample preparation (including fish dissection), assist a graduate student with laboratory analyses of fish and bottlenose dolphin samples, perform literature searches and reviews, curate databases, and assist with statistical analyses and the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and presentations.  The project team will meet weekly to set monthly goals, assess project needs, evaluate project status, discuss challenges, schedule deliverables, and review topic-related journal articles.  Training on statistical methods and scientific methods will occur throughout the academic year during these weekly meetings.

Timeline and time commitment:

Students interested in this project should be prepared to assist with research during the 2023-2024 academic year and summer 2024.  Preference will be given to students interested in assisting for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years (including summer 2024). Because sample collection, processing, and analysis will occur throughout the year, students will dedicate approximately 10 hours per week during the academic year and 20 hours per week during the summer months, at $11/hr.

Students engaging in this research opportunity will:

  1. Participate in field research
  2. Prepare biological samples for laboratory analyses
  3. Develop new ecotoxicological laboratory skills
  4. Perform a targeted literature search and develop a literature matrix
  5. Formulate testable research hypotheses and perform statistical analyses
  6. Enhance their scientific writing and presentation skills

Qualifications:

  • US Citizen
  • Full-time student at the College of Charleston
  • Research assistants will be expected to commit at least 10 hours per week during the academic year and at least 20 hours per week in the summer
  • Research assistants will be expected to travel (domestically) for fieldwork (funding will be provided)

Research Opportunity in Cardiovascular Biology

The Kern lab has openings for undergraduate research that uses mice as models of disease.

This is a basic science position that utilizes standard techniques that allow analyzing different normal and abnormal cardiovascular structures (no experience required).

This is a full-time position with the opportunity to continue throughout the school year. This opportunity is great for rising Seniors, Juniors, and potentially Sophomores to potentially earn Honors Immersed/Bachelor’s Essay Credit .

Applications for the Fall ’23 SC Washington Semester Program are now open

The South Carolina Washington Semester Program (WSP) gives students in universities and colleges across the state of South Carolina the opportunity to spend a semester working and taking classes in Washington D.C., gaining valuable experience while earning academic credit toward their degrees.

The opportunity: Live/Learn/Work. Students live in a historic Capital Hill neighborhood, explore the city through group excursions, all while taking 15 credit hours.

  • 9 credit hours are applied towards a full-time internship in congressional, executive, judicial or private sector offices, which can be applied towards your Honors Immersed requirement.

Great fit forMany CofC Honors students have participated and thrived in this program over the years, with backgrounds ranging from political science to economics to international studies to public health. Participants get firsthand experience with the political process, obtaining skills that will help prepare them for careers in virtually any sphere.

Scholarships available: The program allocates support for students who demonstrate financial need and awards over $10,000 each year in scholarships.

The College of Charleston Career Center will be hosting a Career Exploration Expo on Wednesday, March 29th.

Join Professor Affonso on Monday, February 27th to hear from Google Android Marketing Strategist Steve Logue.

Steve Logue is Head of Android Marketing Strategy at Google, where he looks after GTM plans and ecosystem partnerships globally. He is also an External Advisor at Bain & Co in the telco practice.

Prior to these roles, he worked 25 years in the mobile communications sector in the US, Latin America, Europe, and China. He was founder and CEO of Virgin Mobile Latin America, partnering with Sir Richard Branson and PE investors to build a mobile startup across the region.

Steve will be speaking in Beatty 320 on Monday, February 27th, from 10:00 to 10:50. All Honors Students are welcome to attend!
