Honors students are not just smart. They engage with the campus community as well as the greater Charleston community. They lead in and out of the classroom. They take their responsibility as global citizens seriously. And as a result, they have a global impact.
Few fit that description better than Levi Vonk. During his time at the college, Levi studied abroad several times, took part in internships, and founded a new student organization–all while performing at the top academic level as a William Aiken Fellow. He received the highest award a College undergraduate can earn, the Bishop Smith Award, in recognition of his achievements.
Working with Dr. Anton Vander Zee (an Honors faculty member and the Director of the Nationally Competitive Awards Office), Levi has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Grant to continue his undergraduate research interests on migrant workers in Mexico. Levi’s community involvement both in the Carolinas and abroad bring so much pride to the Honors family and exemplify the type of student we want to foster here. Dr. Folds-Bennett says, “It was my pleasure to support Levi while he was here, and his success as an alumnus is a source of pride for all of us in the Honors College and across campus.”
