HONS 230: Suspense and Surrealism in Film
Instructor: Colleen Glenn
MWF at 1:00 pm

This interdisciplinary course will consider Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch as auteur filmmakers whose works weave psychoanalytic theory and the study of human psychology with traditions in art and literature. Although very different in terms of style and content, both directors share a fascination with violence, mystery, and the uncanny, often revealing the horror to be within the family home. Known as the ā€œMaster of Suspense,ā€ Hitchcock developed distinctive thematic and aesthetic styles in thrillers such asĀ Rear Window,Ā Vertigo,Ā North by Northwest, andĀ Psycho.Ā Influenced by the boom of interest in human behavior in the 1940s and ā€˜50s, Hitchcock helped popularize modern psychology on the big screen. A generation later, Lynch delivered avant-garde works such asĀ Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks,Ā andĀ Mulholland Drive.Ā A sculptor and painter before he became a filmmaker, Lynch drew heavily from surrealist traditions when he moved into cinema, leaving an indelible stamp on the cinematic canon with his edgy and disturbing neo-noir films. Drawing upon art history, psychology, cultural studies, and film studies, we will explore several films from each director, becoming familiar with their unique artistic visions, technique and style, and fascination with the macabre.

Community and Events Manager
An Internship with the Honors College

Overall Job Description:

The Community and Events Manager plays a central role in supporting the Honors College’s community-building efforts. This position focuses on helping design, prepare, and execute a wide range of Honors College events while contributing to the daily life of the Honors community. Under the supervision of the ARCH Scholars Director, the Manager will assist with recruitment and yield initiatives, contribute to the welcoming environment of the Honors College, and collaborate on projects that strengthen student community and engagement. While the role includes managing select communication channels, the social media component is intentionally limited and serves to complement the broader work of fostering a vibrant and inclusive Honors community. The position also offers opportunities to work with media projects, including the creation of short informational videos and other visual materials. Students who find this work meaningful and engaging may have the opportunity to continue in this position beyond a single academic year, making it a multi-year role during their time at the College.

Responsibilities:

Generally speaking, here’s what you can expect to do in this role:

  • Support the planning, coordination, and execution of Honors College events, including community-building activities, academic programming, and special initiatives

  • Assist with recruitment and yield events by helping with preparation, outreach, hospitality, and day-of logistics

  • Contribute to creating a welcoming and engaged community by serving as a visible and helpful presence in the Honors College offices and at events

  • Collaborate on media projects, including producing short informational videos, recording highlights from events, and developing visual materials that support community engagement

  • Use select social media platforms to share key updates, highlight student achievements, and promote community events as needed

  • Participate in a required weekly meeting with the Assistant Dean of the Honors College and the marketing team to review progress, plan upcoming initiatives, and coordinate responsibilities

Specifically, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Helping the Honors team organize events from early planning through post-event follow-up
  • Supporting outreach and communication for recruitment and yield programs
  • Assisting with media creation, including:
    • Short informational or promotional videos
    • Basic video editing and captioning
    • Visual storytelling for Honors initiatives
  • Maintaining limited Honors College social media activity, primarily on platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn, including:
    • Sharing event announcements and community highlights
    • Monitoring engagement and responding to inquiries when appropriate
  • Assisting with updates to the Honors Hub, 10 Green Way blogsite, and Honors College website by editing or uploading content as needed

You’ll also be asked to:

  • Learn and maintain a working understanding of the College’s brand manual and style guide
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Honors team on projects that strengthen community engagement
  • Contribute ideas for enhancing student involvement and improving event experiences
  • Represent the perspectives of Honors students and help ensure that programming reflects their interests and needs

Qualifications:

You might be a good fit for this role if…

  • You’re an Honors student in good standing
  • You enjoy helping bring people together and contributing to community-building efforts
  • You have experience or interest in:
    • Event planning or event support
    • Media creation, including basic video recording or editing
    • Social media platforms (Instagram and LinkedIn in particular)
    • Design tools such as Canva
    • Writing or copyediting
  • You are organized, adaptable, and comfortable assisting with multiple ongoing projects
  • You are collaborative, reliable, and enthusiastic about contributing to the daily life of the Honors College
  • You are eager to grow and develop skills in community engagement, communications, and project management

Students of all majors and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Strong examples that demonstrate any of the above qualities will enhance your application.

Work Schedule and Compensation:

The internship is for 10 hours per week throughout the Spring ’26 semester. Most work will take place on campus in the Honors College office with a consistent weekly schedule, though occasional remote work may be possible depending on project needs.

Pay starts at $11 per hour.

If you have questions about the position, contact your supervisor: Salvatore Musumeci (musumecis@cofc.edu).
