Here’s another look at a department & major at the College. See our other installments here and here.
What: College of Charleston is one of the few schools in the Southeast—and the only one in South Carolina—to offer this unique major. The program aims to prepare students for careers as leaders, managers, and members of art organizations. A few areas of emphasis include: management, organization, fundraising, financial management, grant writing, marketing and educational programming. Students are also encouraged to augment their studies with another academic major or minor to give them an even more flexible and diverse skill set.
Who: Graduates of the Art Management major have impressive rap sheets (think Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Carnegie Hall of Colleton County Arts Council and Oakland Museum of California, to name just a few). So do professors. Would you like to study under Grammy-winning Hootie and the Blowfish museum Mark Bryan? How about a New York Times music industry writer? Yeah, we thought so.
Where: We’re lucky to attend college in a vibrant, historical city where art abounds. Students can intern anywhere from high-end galleries to grassroots art collectives right in downtown Charleston. There are also numerous concert venues around the city where students can seek experience.
Why: Well-connected faculty members means tons of opportunities for networking and internships right here in Charleston. You don’t need us to tell you the importance of internships and work experience in your undergraduate years—and this major provides excellent resources for your search. You’ll graduate as a jack-of-all-trades with a widely varied set of abilities and strengths, which will make you an ideal candidate for employment in the post-graduate world.
