Department Internship: Department Media Intern

The Department of English seeks a Department Media Intern to start fall semester and continue through the academic year. This paid internship requires a commitment of 7 hours per week, at a rate of $10 per hour. The intern will be responsible for creating and managing multimedia content for the department website, blog, and social media accounts by: developing stories on current student and faculty; alumni experiences and achievements; and publicizing and covering department events.

The intern will work closely with the student leadership of Literati (the English student organization) and Sigma Tau Delta (the English honors society) and will be supervised by the department chair, Prof. Seaman, and by the Department Media Coordinator, Prof. Craig.

Anyone who accepts the internship will receive training from the Department Media Coordinator in digital writing and design, but candidates with experience writing for blogs, writing for organizational social media profiles, and/or designing visual documents like flyers are welcome. Most importantly, we seek candidates who wish to be more fully immersed in the major and who enjoy writing, who are comfortable working to meet deadlines but are also self-motivated, who will actively pursue new ideas and create opportunities, and who will be a strong voice for all English majors.

By Friday, August 24, please send a cover letter, resume, and writing sample to Prof. Seaman (seamanm@cofc.edu) and Prof. Craig (craigjw1@cofc.edu) via e-mail to apply for the position.

Include in the cover latter a statement of the particular reasons you would like to be the Department Media Intern, some ideas for improving the online presence of the English Department, as well as your available time during fall semester. Applicants are encouraged to browse the work of last year’s interns on Folio (blogs.charleston.edu/folio), Instagram (instagram.com/englishcofc), Facebook (facebook.com/CofCEnglish/), and Twitter (twitter.com/EnglishCofC) to develop ideas for how you might contribute to the department’s online presence. Your writing sample should reflect some of the work you’ll be asked to do in the internship (for example, a piece of writing shared online or a piece of design work like a flyer). If you would like assistance developing your resume, please contact the Career Center (http://careercenter.cofc.edu/).
