Zinfandel: welcome to the political front of wine

  1. What I thought was fascinating was that their can be a certain grape “that took over the California wine production for a century until it was overtaken by Cabernet Savignon in 1992”.The wine producers couldn’t fathom to find the certain vine grape from the year 1992 until Meredith got a email saying they found a different grape that they can breed together. It’s crazy to me that a grape can be such a huge debate to the public and cause so much chaos.

  2. Based on what we have talked about in class I was not entirely surprised by the politics in the wine industry because we learned in class that you cannot completely own vineyard land because of the history of land ownership. What did surprise me was that there were so many moving parts to this story and so many hands involved.

  3. Though I found it very fascinating that there has been such dispute over the origin and name of Zinfandel, this does not surprise me. As we have learned more about the politics surrounding the world of wine, and I have paid more attention to wine-related news since starting this class, I have found that this industry can be surprisingly petty, messy, and vindictive.

  4. I think that it is super cool how you can basically DNA test a grape! I would not have thought that you were able to do this and then compare to all of the other grapes used for wine. It was interesting to hear about the politics surrounding the wine industry but given that the history of wine is starting to become foggy to some people and money is at the forefront, I am not entirely shocked.
