Study Abroad Scholarships & Funding

Many study abroad programs offer some form of financial aid and some also offer scholarships to help defray your costs. Normally, you apply for program-administered scholarships and financial aid at the same time that you apply for that program. Make sure to do your research to determine whether you qualify.

In addition to the resources offered by individual programs, there are also competitive scholarships available to fund summer and/or semester study abroad:

 

 

College of Charleston Study Abroad Scholarships

There are a number of scholarships for summer and semester-long study abroad for College of Charleston students. Scholarships include the $1,500-2,000 Center for International Education award, The Cain Family International Scholarship, and the Huge Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship.

 

CofC Huge Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship provides funding for a semester-long study abroad in Estonia. The internationally acclaimed University of Tartu in Estonia offers a wide range of classes in English, as well as in Russian language. This scholarship would provide an excellent funding opportunity for Russian Studies students to spend a semester in Eastern Europe.

 

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Fellowships for study in Moscow with American Councils

U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) fellowships are available for advanced overseas Russian language study. Fulbright-Hays fellowships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Fellowship awards are made in the amount of $7,000 for semester programs and $4,000 for summer programs, and are available for the Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program in Moscow.

 

American Councils Dan E Davidson Fellowships

Established in honor of American Councils’ founder and President Emeritus and his four decades of leadership in the field of international education, the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship supports highly qualified and deserving individuals who would otherwise not have the opportunity to build the skills that allow them to operate, negotiate, and establish ties in countries critical to U.S. economic, political, and social interests through language study and area studies coursework. Carrying on Dr. Davidson’s legacy, fellowship recipients demonstrate a dedication to successful international collaboration and the development of greater mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries around the world.

Beginning fall semester 2018, fellowships of up to $1,000 will be awarded for summer study, up to $4,000 for semester study and up to $8,500 for academic-year programs.

To be eligible for the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Meet the requirements of their selected program;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Be enrolled in and have completed two academic years of study at an accredited college or university by the start of their program;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to becoming culturally aware citizens, contributing to a mutual understanding, and advancing successful international collaboration;
  • Demonstrate financial need.

To be considered for the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship, simply indicate your wish to be considered for financial aid when completing the application for your selected program and complete all the questions and forms that follow.

At the conclusion of their term abroad, participants receiving the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship are expected to meet with donors and write an essay about their study abroad experience.

 

American Councils Business Russian Language & Internship (BRLI) Program

Combining intensive language classes and substantive internships in St. Petersburg or Moscow, BRLI gives students invaluable insight into the global workplace and prepares them to use Russian in a professional context. Expert resident directors help participants maximize their immersion through extracurricular activities and excursions.

Scholarships are made on the basis of financial need, program compatibility, and academic merit, and typically range from $500 to $2,500. The BTI Scholarship award ranges from $3,000 to $5,000 to eligible finalists.

 

American Councils Overseas Professional and Intercultural Training Program (OPIT)

OPIT gives students the substantive overseas professional experience and intercultural skills demanded by today’s global market. English-language internships are available in a wide range of fields, including business, humanities, social sciences, innovation, and STEM disciplines throughout the Balkans, the Baltics, and Eurasia.

With support from a wide range of funders, American Councils has established several scholarships to support U.S. students engage in overseas study. All applicants to American Councils summer, semester, or academic-year overseas programs are eligible for partial scholarship awards from the American Councils Outbound Scholarship Fund, which include:

  • AC Study Abroad Need-Based Scholarship
  • AC Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship
  • Business, Techology, and Innovation Scholarship (available only for Russia)
  • Language & Area Studies Scholarship
  • Alumni Scholarship

 

The Arizona State University Critical Languages Institute

The Arizona State University Critical Languages Institute is accepting applications for its 2017 summer language programs in the U.S. and abroad. CLI offers intensive courses in less commonly taught languages in the U.S. and overseas. Students admitted to CLI pay a flat fee of $900 for up to 13 semester credits, in addition to study-abroad fees if they opt to study overseas.

Scholarships are available for undergraduate students, graduate students, and non-students: Department of State Title VIII Fellowships for selected languages, ROTC Project GO Scholarships for selected languages; Melikian Scholarships for all languages, and language-specific support for several languages. The Boren Awards for International Study

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

 

The Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

 

The Critical Languages Scholarship Program

Highly competitive scholarship offered by the U.S. Department of State that fully sponsors 8-week summer abroad program in Kazan or Ufa, Russia.

 

The Davis Fellows for Peace Awards

Kathryn Davis Fellowships cover 100% of tuition, room, and board for one summer of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in any of the eleven languages offered at the Middlebury College Language Schools, including Russian.

 

SRAS Home and Abroad Scholarships

SRAS’s Home and Abroad Scholarship program combines intensive language study with a generous scholarship and a resume-building internship. Designed for maximum flexibility, this program will help support and nurture student interests in fields as diverse as journalism, economics, history, and art.

The scholarship will apply $5000 to a semester of Russian as a Second Language in select SRAS locations. Students begin their intensive internship from home and continue it while abroad. Students who complete a full semester abroad can elect to continue their studies for an optional second semester, with up to an additional $5000 applied to any SRAS program.
