Slow Violence

In this scene from And Tomorrow the Entire World, we see police officers storming into a peaceful gathering and stirring up the crowd as they are forced away. The tensions quickly rise, and conflict breaks out between the two groups. A brief part of this scene is slowed down in its original version, but by slowing down the rest of the scene as well, a sense of desperation begins to take shape. This group of protesters feels as if the entire country is against them, and when they get ambushed by riot police over a harmless gathering, it feels like a direct attack. For the entire film, we see these protesters doing whatever they can for their cause, and at this point, the only thing that they can do to support it is to fight. When faced with violence from the police, their only immediate mode of retaliation is more violence. By slowing the violence down, the motives become more clear as the chaos of the conflict subsides. The passion of the protesters and their dedication to the cause is visible in their eyes and on their faces as they throw themselves at the institution that was supposed to protect them.
