SAW IV

Southern Aesthetics Workshop Comes to Charleston

The Aesthetics WorkGroup, along with the Department of Philosophy, hosted the Fourth Annual Southern Aesthetics Workshop, affectionately known as “SAW IV!!!” (this is to be said in a mock-menacing horror movie announcer voice) the weekend of October 14-15 in 2022.

SAW IV brought an extraordinary group of 35 scholars together to talk about a variety of topics in aesthetics. Twelve scholars—from graduate students to full professors—presented their works in progress on wide range of topics, including reimagining beauty through fat vanity projects, atmosphere in painting, lingering aesthetic effects, interpretation, marriage in film, cringe, aesthetic motivations, the aesthetics of food, the Rothko Chapel, aesthetic reactive attitudes, and Buddhist approaches to experiencing horror films. Marcus Amaker, the first Poet Laureate of Charleston, was the keynote speaker.

Each presentation had two commentators, so discussion was lively. Participants came from Auburn; CofC; Florida International University; Furman; Georgetown; the Universities of Georgia, Louisville, South Carolina, South Florida and Texas; and Warren Wilson College. Students in Jonathan Neufeld’s Aesthetics class read three papers in advance and came to the conference to meet the authors. As a perfect end to a weekend of aesthetics, visitors enjoyed the opening of Charleston oyster season at Bowens Island!

Prof. McKinnon to Speak at University of British Columbia.

Professor Rachel McKinnon will be speaking at a symposium, on March 11, in Kelowna at University of British Columbia on free expression. This symposium covers both philosophy of language and political philosophy.

Prof. Coseru presenting at the XVIIth Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies and the 5th International Dharmakirti Conference

Prof. Christian Coseru will be giving a paper, “Reflexive Sensibility and the Madhyamika’s View from Nowhere” at the XVIIth Congress of the International Association of Buddhist Studies in Vienna Austria on 8/23/14. During the same trip, he will be giving a paper, “Consciousness and Causal Explanation: Santaraksita Against Physicalism” at the 5th International Dharmakirti Conference in Heidelberg Germany on 8/28/14.

Prof. Hettinger to deliver the keynote address at the 11th Annual Meeting on Environmental Philosophy

Ned Hettinger will be delivering the keynote address “Age of Man Environmentalism and Respect for an Independent Nature” for the 11th Annual Meeting on Environmental Philosophy in Allenspark, Colorado in June 2014.

Prof. Sheridan Hough will be giving a talk, “That Poor and Erring Organ: Nietzsche on Consciousness and Instinct.” Prof. Christian Coseru will be giving a talk, “Reflexive Sensibility: The Bedrock of Consciousness.”

Professor Coseru invited to speak at Marquette University

Professor Coseru will deliver a talk, “A Buddhist View of Cognitive Phenomenology” at Marquette University as part of the “Self-Awareness and Subjectivity in Consciousness: Buddhist and Contemporary Philosophical Perspectives” workshop, on Tuesday, April 10, 2014.

Professor Coseru invited to speak at TCU’s Ronald E. Moore Humanities Symposium on “Consciousness”

Professor Coseru will deliver a talk, “Consciousness and Causal Explanation” at TCU’s Ronald E. Moore Humanities Symposium on “Consciousness.” Apart from his presentation, Professor Coseru will also engage in a round table discussion on “Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Buddhism” with Katalin Balog, Bob Kentridge, and Vanessa Miller.
