Position Description: The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing exceptional live music, dance, and education for the Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan region. TAPA comprises two member organizations: the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet. These storied organizations have deep community roots and a combined 156 years of serving more than 260,000 individuals annually through performances and education programs in Toledo and its surrounding areas.
TAPA is an unusual merger of complementary art forms that creates new and invigorating programs, provides cost and revenue synergies, and integrates the performing arts through shared educational missions.
TAPA seeks a strategic and self-motivated Director of Marketing with exceptional interpersonal skills. This position leads TAPA’s marketing and box office staff as well as volunteers. The Director of Marketing represents the organization publicly and establishes strategies for long-term growth.
The Director of Marketing is part of TAPA’s senior leadership team. This role is responsible for designing the organization’s overall marketing strategy and overseeing direct and indirect reports to bring it to life. The Director of Marketing works closely with the President & CEO, TAPA’s Board of Trustees, and senior management to determine goals and budgets; identify additional earned income opportunities; and maintain TAPA’s reputation for creativity, quality, and excellence.
The Director of Marketing is the chief liaison between the organization and its subscribers, ticket buyers, media outlets, and vendors. The Director of Marketing also liaises extensively with the Director of Development to develop patron engagement opportunities.
Core Responsibilities:
- Marketing: Lead the organization’s overall marketing strategy:
- Ticketing Revenue: Responsible and accountable for setting TAPA’s annual ticket revenue goals (~$1.5M); monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) associated with these goals; and form and enact strategies related to consumer acquisition, retention, migration, and revenue maximization.
- Marketing Planning: Create a comprehensive marketing plan that supports TAPA’s programmatic and institutional initiatives.
- Programming: Act as a sounding board for the TAPA Music Director and President & CEO to develop strong programming.
- Vendor Management: Develop and assess TAPA’s relationship with paid-media contacts, consultants, agencies, and telemarketers.
- Team Leadership: Manage and develop direct and indirect reports, including marketing and box office staff (3), contractors (3), and volunteers.
- Branding: Develop and maintain the brand identities of the Toledo Symphony, Toledo Ballet, and educational initiatives:
- Develop and maintain brand pillars, mission/vision/values, voice, logos/taglines, and visual standards.
- Manage these facets across the organization to ensure cultural adherence.
- Communications: Advance TAPA’s best interests across media channels:
- Manage all digital content, including website, social media, online, and mobile communications.
- Oversee the development of all direct mail communications, including postcards, brochures, and official announcements.
- Design and schedule all print, radio, and video advertisements.
- Content Marketing: Develop TAPA’s distributed content:
- Manage the design, content, and function of all TAPA websites, microsites, ecommerce system, and live streaming platform.
- Supervise the design and sales strategy for TAPA program books and ensure all publication deadlines are met.
- Oversee the development of catalogs, brochures, pamphlets, posters, banners, and other recognizable TAPA collateral.
- Manage graphic designers and creative professionals to ensure consistency across communications.
- Public Relations: Develop and maintain TAPA’s relationship with key media and press contacts:
- Manage the creation and distribution of press releases, scheduling of media interviews, and coordination of all major announcements and press conferences.
- Act as TAPA spokesperson to communicate initiatives and campaigns and to cultivate a positive public image.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
- 5-7 years demonstrated marketing experience highly desirable
- Supervisory experience with positive management style
- Must have the ability to plan strategy and implement tactics while keeping a broad, institution-wide perspective
- Must possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Must be highly organized, creative, and motivated
- Must demonstrate initiative, accept accountability, effectively manage time, and respond to inquiries in a timely manner
- Must demonstrate tech savvy, including desktop publishing, social media, and CRM; familiarity with live streaming technology a plus
- Must be a team player and maintain positive working relationships
- Interest in and/or knowledge of symphonic music and dance is a plus
- Is expected to attend events and meetings before and after normal work hours as necessary
