Position Description Under new and exciting leadership, Joslin extends a search for an experienced, strategic and dynamic Senior Director of Development, Special Events.

Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Director will be responsible for leading the strategic planning and execution of the special events program for Joslin Diabetes Center.

In this key role, the Senior Director will manage a team responsible for Joslin’s signature annual fundraising events, community events and third party event fundraisers. As a member of the Development senior management team, s/he will be responsible for enhancing the visibility and fundraising success of Joslin’s special events and is responsible for recruiting successful event committee chairs and members, managing the event and program budgets and partnering with Joslin leadership to assess and elevate the event portfolio.

Responsibilities Include

  • Establishes and implements a vision and strategy for all existing and future special events by defining short and long-term goals and objectives; and implements these goals and objectives in alignment with the strategy and priorities of Joslin Diabetes Center.
  • Provides leadership, professional expertise and direction in the planning and execution of high-quality fundraising events to advance and increase fundraising revenue for Joslin.
  • Develops a strategic plan to maximize corporate sponsorship and in-kind auction opportunities by partnering with the Senior Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations and signature event committee members.
  • Leads Development relationship building and collaborative planning with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Works to recruit, cultivate, retain and recognize effective signature event committee chairs and members, as well as strategize with key stakeholders regarding event honorees.
  • Leads the strategic development of community event program and third party fundraising, including Team Joslin, a program that manages fundraising and training programs for individuals and teams in conjunction with specific athletic initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities for ongoing business development, improvement in processes, and revenue generation through events. Develops and implements ideas that contribute to the diversification and strengthening of revenue generation.
  • Manages all reporting, budgeting, and accounting for events.
  • Assists in planning, monitoring and managing budget in the Special Events unit. Manages reporting, budgeting, and accounting for signature events and community fundraising programs.
  • Manages the assessment of special events and provides oversight of the staff through effective performance management, targets, and goal setting as appropriate. Defines key performance indicators to monitor/track event performance, including customer service, efficiency, and financial performance.
  • Develops and promotes systems to raise awareness of future events, including cause marketing initiatives, signature events and community programs to mitigate conflicts and challenges and to maximize fundraising revenue.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Possess

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum 10 years of experience at a similar or equivalent level with Minimum 5 years of supervisory/management experience
  • Experience in academic medicine is highly preferred
  • Solid management with experience in team building and performance based metrics
  • Strong project management skills and ability to problem solve
  • Creative and entrepreneurial strategist with strong connections to the Boston community
  • A team player who communicates effectively and displays diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and successfully utilize leaders and volunteers in achieving fundraising goals
  • Demonstrated success building and managing event committees
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or other relational databases preferred
  • Ability to travel and weekend work as needed
