ENGL 555: Literary Criticism
Professor: Dr. Scott Lucas
Location: The Citadel
Time: Tuesday 5:30 – 8:15
Modality: Face-to-Face
We will study the history and influence of literary criticism in the Western tradition, from its earliest expressions to contemporary theoretical approaches. We will explore various views on the proper focus and scope of literary criticism, and we will assess the importance of recent theoretical-critical approaches not only to the study of literary art but to the very question of what constitutes literature itself. Expect to read brief excerpts from classic expressions of literary and aesthetic criticism from the ancient Greeks to the Victorian period, and then to focus more closely on the important movements of the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries, including New Criticism, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism and Deconstruction, Feminist criticism, Post-colonial criticism, Queer Theory, and the recent rise of “post-human” approaches to literature, such as eco-criticism and Animal Studies.
