While dystopian fiction, film, and even longform television have deservedly received significant scholarly attention, dystopian theater has been surprisingly overlooked, yet the myriad sociopolitical and economic upheavals of the current century have inspired a renaissance of dystopian plays in America and the British Isles. This course will explore not only the imaginative and stylistic innovations that characterize this often-prescient literature, but the ways in which staged productions connect to audiences differently from—and at times more effectively than—prose. Readings include Caryl Churchill’s Far Away (2000) and A Number (2002), debbie tucker green’s Stoning Mary (2005), Dawn King’s Foxfinder (2011), Jennifer Haley’s The Nether (2013), Alistair McDowell’s Pomona (2014), Philip Ridley’s Radiant Vermin (2015), Ella Road’s The Phlebotomist (2018), Morna Pearson’s Darklands (2019), and Jordan E. Cooper’s Ain’t No Mo (2023).
