ENGL 533: Modern British Drama

Dates: Hosted by The Citadel: June 26 – August 12 (Summer II)
Modality: Two evening synchronous online meetings per week. Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:00 – 9:45 PM
Professor: Dr. Thomas Horan

Course Description:

This course will acquaint you with seminal plays by some of the most influential British and Commonwealth playwrights of the last hundred or so years. Through short lectures, class conversations, and a bit of impromptu acting, we will contextualize this drama within historical, social, political, and artistic frameworks. We will also explore the stylistic and thematic innovations that characterize this literature. Finally, we will consider how and why the issues confronted by these playwrights, including concerns related to ethnicity, gender, sexuality, politics, and social class remain relevant today. Readings will include plays by George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, John Osborne, Harold Pinter, Joe Orton, Wole Soyinka, Edward Bond, Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Sarah Kane, and Bola Agbaje. This course is hybrid, meaning some students will attend in person and others will attend virtually.

ENGL 556: Theory and Practice of Teaching Composition

Dates: Hosted by CofC: June 5 – June 30 (Summer I)
Modality: Online Asynchronous
Professor: Dr. Meg Scott-Copses

Course Description: In this course, you will study pedagogical approaches for teaching composition, focusing specifically on writing as a social, rhetorical, and process-oriented act. Together, we will develop a critical framework for considering audience, genre, literacy, language difference, identity, and other writing-related issues. Most importantly, you will draw on what you learn to design new materials—a teaching philosophy, syllabus, and sample assignments—that could be used as part of an application to teach writing at the college level and elsewhere.
