Fall ’19: ENGL 502 – Shakespeare

Professor Devin Byker. Fulfills the British Literature before 1800 requirement. Meets at the College of Charleston, Tuesday, 6-8:45 p.m.

This course will examine Shakespeare’s work from a number of shifting angles. In addition to addressing some of the historical circumstances and performance conditions that shape his drama, we will organize our reading of plays and sonnets around five units devoted to major critical approaches in Shakespeare studies today, including queer theory and sexuality studies, the study of early modern religion, history of the book and print culture, critical race studies, and a broadly defined posthumanism that may encompass object-oriented ontology, animal studies, and environmental studies. By doing so, this course hopes to provide students with an advanced introduction both to Shakespeare’s works and to some prominent methodological tools in Shakespearean scholarship.
