Brett Carter ’11: Freelance Graphic Designer and PhD Candidate

Since graduating with my MA in English from The Citadel in 2011, I have frequently presented research at academic conferences and contributed to multiple academic publications. I taught writing at several institutions across South Carolina and Alabama before beginning a Ph.D. in Composition, Rhetoric, and English Studies at the University of Alabama. My dissertation argues for expanding notions of ethos and confidence in contemporary rhetoric and positioning character, trust, and authenticity as central to persuasion. I currently teach courses on writing, the rhetoric of trickery, and the American con artist, while also doing freelance web and graphic design and remaining active in community service. I have worked on archiving and oral history projects in Alabama and served as campaign manager for a candidate in a regional charity competition. I currently live in Birmingham, Alabama with my wife, Sarah, and daughter, Alice.
