Since graduating from the English MA program, I have spent the past eight years managing a Charleston real estate group. I have found that an English background is ideal for marketing and business relations since so much of what I do is learned from experience or tailored to my specific industry. After all, if I can learn to parse Old English, I can learn basic computer programming! Working for a locally owned business means that I wear many hats, and I spend my work time managing websites, posting to social media, planning events, writing contracts and press releases, helping our Realtors, and brainstorming new marketing strategies. Although my career does not follow the linear path for most English graduates, I have learned that critical thinking coupled with effective communication skills are in high demand for a wide range of professional fields.
