First day in Ireland

It is now our 4th day in Ireland and this is my first opportunity to write about all of our adventures of this past week! I’ll start with the first day, or this post will become insufferably long.  We arrived on the 5th of June, Carter, Donna and Eric from the U.S. and I arrived from Brussels, Belgium, where I had been visiting my family after being in Italy for about a month. We arrived to blue skies and warm weather in Shannon around mid-day and started our trek to Youghal.

On the drive we encountered some extensive visas and beautiful blooming landscapes as we drove through the Vee or the passage between two mountains. We also visited a John Nash designed St. Paul’s Church and the Swiss Cottage, two very different pieces of architecture but integral pieces of my architectural history education here in Ireland (as Carter says) . The Swiss Cottage is the best example of an ornamental cottage in the entire world.

After visiting the Swiss Cottage we felt that we needed to get going on to Youghal before it got too late. We arrived in Youghal to our “holiday home” as they call it, in the lovely setting along the coast and next to the beach (I know hard life). We all got settled in for the night in preparation for a site visit to Molana the next day!
