To have an Honors College designation on your transcript when you graduate from the College of Charleston, you must successfully complete all Honors College requirements, college-wide general education requirements, and requirements for your major(s). You must also meet Honors Academic Progress Standards.
Honors College requirements for all classes entering Fall 2021 to Spring 2023:
- Honors Core
- HONS 100 Beyond George Street (1 credit hour; must be completed in the first semester)
- Honors Engaged – a 1-year community engagement project to be fulfilled in the first year of the honors program.
- HONS 110 Honors Academic Writing (4 credit hours; must be taken in first year of the honors program).
- At least one Honors Foundations Course (3-5 credit hours each; must be taken in the first year of the honors program).
- A Quantitative Literacy Course (3 credit hours). Can also be satisfied with Math 120 (or AP credit).
- At least two courses in Exploring Complexity and Diversity Colloquia (3-4 credit hours each).
- At least one Advanced Studies Course, which includes an upper-level Honors Special Topics or a 200-level or above Honors Disciplinary course (3-4 credit hours).
- At least 22 HONS credit hours within the Honors Core must be completed. Students can apply up to 3 credit hours of HONS Professional Enrichment courses towards their 22-credit requirement; all other credits must come from one of the categories listed above.
- Honors Directed – these requirements are negotiated individually with a faculty mentor:
- Honors Immersed (3 Credit Hours) – See guidelines and form.
- Bachelor’s Essay (6 Credit Hours)
- These requirements do not need to be HONS and can be completed under a departmental course number. A student workflow for the Bachelor’s Essay is also available.
- A cumulative GPA of 3.400 or higher

- Honors Core

- HONS 103 A/B: Honors Engaged – a 1-year community engagement project to be fulfilled in the first year of the honors program.
- HONS 110: Honors Academic Writing (4 credit hours; must be taken in first year of the honors program).
