Climate Change and the Law: Rising Tides Wash Up Legal Issues

Charleston School of Law and Furman University are hosting Climate Change and the Law: Rising Tides and Wash Up Legal Issues on Friday, February 24, 2023, 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., at The Charleston Museum.

Featured will be conversations centered around the legality of climate change policy. Panels will include subjects such as; Trends in Climate Litigation, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Management Projects and the Charleston Peninsula Study, Ethical Considerations in Climate Change: Renewable Energy, the Role of the Law Firm in a Changing Climate, and Other Considerations.

7th Annual German-American Business Summit

The German-American Business Summit on February 8th, 2023 in the Stern Center Ballroom will provide a unique opportunity to connect with German companies in the Southeastern US that are seeking to establish stronger ties to undergraduate education in the region.

The event consists of a job and internship expo, keynote presentations and panel discussions from business leaders on pressing issues in German-American industry, and a networking reception. Both of the day’s main events provide extensive opportunities for networking. Awards Available for Semester/Summer Abroad Trips

To support increasing student interest and participation in public service, especially foreign service and/or globally focused civil service internships, awards will be given to students who secure experiential learning opportunities during summer or semester abroad programs.

Students will be given a $3,000-$5,000 internship award for programs that directly relate to public service, with preference for foreign or civil service broadly conceived.

Recipients will be able to apply their work experience to myriad endeavors and will gain a distinguished advantage amongst their peers because of their direct exposure to global issues.

Students will submit an application and be selected by a committee comprised of LCWA faculty. The selection committee will recommend award winners to the Dean of LCWA, who will make the final selections.

Gilman Scholarship supports study abroad for students with limited financial means

Gilman International ScholarshipThe U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide that start between May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022. This cycle encompasses Summer 2023, Fall 2023, Academic Year 2023-2024, and Spring 2023 programs.

Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000. The Critical Need Language Award is competitive and offered to a limited number of Gilman scholars each year.

The Cyberspace Cooperation Initiative at ORF America convenes experts, promotes dialogue, and produces quality research on current challenges to security and stability in cyberspace. The Cyberspace Cooperation Initiative was started in 2009 at the EastWest Institute and initiated some of the earliest dialogue on the critical issues of cooperation in cyberspace. Now at ORF America, the initiative is focused on promoting international cooperation and building capacity to address cyber threats in emerging economies. The initiative currently runs the Global Cyber Policy Dialogues, a series of regional dialogues aiming to improve cyberspace governance and cooperation by bringing together stakeholders on a regional basis to improve trust and cooperation. The project convenes regional meetings in Southeast Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America around key cyber challenges such as cyberspace governance, emerging technologies, and public-private partnerships.

Job Summary

Internships at ORF America allow students with the opportunity for academic, professional, and personal development. Interns will work closely with their supervisor on research projects, and administrative and logistical support. This position would primarily support the Global Cyber Policy Dialogues project, as well as the overall programming of the initiative. This position offers the opportunity for interns to gain exposure to the field of international cyber policy, understanding who the key stakeholders are, and delve into some of the current issues facing the international community. This position allows interns to understand how cyber issues are dealt with on a political and policy level, and how these issues intersect with international affairs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with research for the Global Cyber Policy Dialogues including contributing to background briefs and identifying potential participants and speakers
  • Assist in the preparation and execution of events as part of the project, including preparing background materials, assisting with registration, organizational tasks, and taking notes
  • Monitor current policy, technology, and business developments related to ICT security
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the initiative and assist with other tasks as requested

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a relevant graduate or undergraduate degree program at an accredited college or university
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; ORF America does not sponsor visas for interns
  • Background in international relations, public policy, political science, or another relevant field
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail
  • Fluency in English
  • The ability and drive to perform in a fast-paced international environment
  • The ability to work within a team and efficiently handle multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in basic computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and GoogleApps)

Compensation

This position is unpaid. Students will be eligible to receive course credit from their college or university for the internship.

Program Director Internship for New Local Mental Health Nonprofit: Quest in Recovery

Quest in Recovery is offering a unique opportunity to work closely alongside a CofC alum for a nonprofit that offers community-led mental health and recovery resources for young adults and college students.

About the Organization

Lutheran Services Carolinas is a faith-based health and human services organization that supports refugees arriving to North and South Carolina as part of the US State Department’s Reception and Placement Program. Currently in the Charleston area, LSC is providing services to refugees from Afghanistan, Congo, and Ukraine, including refugees from various parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

LSC helps refugees with the resettlement process in the United States, assisting with arrival, housing, employment, healthcare, education, and in general, helping them adjust to their new community.

In partnership with the College of Charleston’s International Studies Program, LSC is offering internship opportunities for students interested in issues of international migration, cross- cultural communication, and community outreach. Below are some of the sample activities interns would participate in:

  1. Work closely with an LSC case manager to support refugees (families, children, and individuals) resettled in Charleston.
  2. Help with logistics and administrative tasks at LSC’s Charleston office.
  3. Engage in community outreach and public education programming to create more cultural awareness and cross-cultural competency in Charleston about issues related to international migration.
  4. Read an interdisciplinary collection of sources focused on issues of international migration, and develop a reading guide for LSC volunteers and staff.
  5. Support LSC in educational workshops for refugees and volunteers

Eligibility and How to Apply

  1. Students should have completed International Studies courses at the 100 and 200 levels at the College of Charleston campus before applying for this internship.
  2. Students should demonstrate in their application materials how their studies and previous experiences could contribute to LSC’s work.

Community Engagement Intern

Time commitment: 15 hours a week

Location: In person at the LSC office, North Charleston

Duties:

  • Assist with weekly communication and coordination of volunteers
  • Research potential partner organizations and compile contact information
  • Help onboard new Circle of Welcome teams
  • Serve as a liaison between the College of Charleston’s refugee task force and LSC
  • Assist in event/training planning and execution
  • Assist with volunteer documentation and other office tasks
  • Catalog and sort donations and provide donors with appropriate forms
  • Other duties as assigned by the Outreach Coordinator

Refugee Resettlement Intern

Time commitment: 15 hours a week

Location: In person at the LSC office, North Charleston

Duties:

  • Assist case management staff with pre-arrival duties such as applications for public benefits, locating housing, organizing airport reception
  • Make appointments for clients when necessary
  • Assist the case manager in providing services to clients (education, health services, housing, food, transportation, legal services)
  • Assist with other administrative tasks including updating case files and documentation
  • Assist staff with identification of needs and coordination of the appropriate referrals to meet those needs
  • Attend home visits with case management staff and assist with case notes
  • Transport items to and from clients as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Refugee Employment Intern

Time commitment: 15 hours a week

Location: In person at the LSC office, North Charleston

Duties:

  • Complete trainings on state and Office on Refugee Resettlement employment programs, including Refugee Social Services, Refugee Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and Matching Grant
  • Provide support to Employment Specialist staff through case noting, documentation, and other administrative tasks
  • Assist in referring refugee clients to community-based resources that will reduce barriers to employment, including but not limited to childcare resources, ESL services, financial literacy training, transportation, mental health resources,
  • Provide support for Matching Grant orientations, Job Readiness Training, and Financial Literacy Training
  • As needed, teach refugee clients how to pay rent, utilities, etc. and provide budgeting and financial education
  • Provide bus training to refugees as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by Area Manager and/or Employment Specialist staff
