Front Desk Position in the Center for Student Learning (CSL)

The Front Desk Assistant serves as the first contact for students, faculty, staff, guests, and other drop-ins. The CSL is located on the first floor of the Addlestone Library. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and the ability to multi-task in a bustling office.

The Center for Student Learning (CSL) at the College of Charleston is seeking a hard-working, customer-service-centered student to work part-time in their physical office for the academic year of 2022-2023. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursdays 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, Fridays 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and occasional Sundays from 3:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

Duties/Responsibilities include:

Answering telephone(s) and routing calls to appropriate individuals/offices on campus; monitoring the email; assisting students in scheduling appointments for staff; greeting and interacting with visitors/guests to the CSL; assisting students with making appointments for tutoring services; providing high levels of customer service; creating a welcome and inclusive environment for all individuals.

Ongoing use of copier, scanner, and paper shredder will be required. Additionally, they will guide student employees with timesheet completion and support Lab Directors and CSL staff with all administrative needs.

Other duties to be performed as assigned, such as creating banners, signs, and bulletin boards.

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; general knowledge of campus resources; ability to interact with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and to exhibit a positive, helpful attitude; ability to work and maintain focus in a sometimes demanding and stressful environment; working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Outlook for mail and calendar purposes (preferred).

Friends of MSF at CofC Virtual Event

On Thursday, March 24th at 7 pm, Friends of MSF will have a Tanya Morshed, a speaker from MSF, presenting via zoom.

Tanya Morshed is an experienced social worker who previously served as a Mental Health Activity Manager in the field with MSF; Tanya Morshed also participated in a small response for Afghan refugees during her assignment in Tajikistan.

Beyond the Filter: Telling Stories with Photographs of Family and Community

Next Tuesday, March 22nd from 12:30 to 1:45 the College Libraries and the Office of Institutional Diversity will be putting on Beyond the Filter: Telling Stories with Photographs of Family and Community.

Students are invited to bring their favorite photos – digital or print – and share stories with one another. Through sharing photographs of family and loved ones, participants will contribute and discover stories about themselves and one another revealing roots, connections, and provocative parallels that surprise and engage us in community.

In addition to sharing photographs, scholars and community members will discuss the power of images for storytelling, identity, and representation in our public memory. Specimens of historic photographs including daguerreotypes, tintypes, cabinet cards, and stereoviews will also be on display.

Help Save a Life with Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

The Office of Student Wellness and Well-being offers training for the CofC campus community in suicide intervention. Learn what you can say and do to help a friend in distress. Training sessions are typically held over the summer months on campus (typically in July and August) with multiple options including two-day, intervention skills training and single day sessions focused on campus resources. Students are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Present Your Work at the First-Ever CofC Expo in April

Submit an abstract highlighting your student research, creative activities, or community service projects.

CofC Expo 2022 is the first event of its kind at the College, and will showcase student research, creative activities and community service projects from across campus. This is a perfect opportunity for students to share their highly impressive undertakings with the local community, and to gain public presentation experience that will be valuable for future endeavors.

CofC Expo 2022 is scheduled for Thursday, April 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in TD Arena (301 Meeting Street). This event is free and open to the public.

Want to participate? Submit an abstract to be considered. The deadline to submit an abstract is March 14.

Volunteer with the Lonon Foundation!

The Lonon Foundation is looking for student volunteers to volunteer with UPLIFT. The UPLIFT Program provides free monthly events for children ages 6-17 affected by a parent or caregiver’s cancer.

The Lonon Foundation will be hosting an orientation Zoom session for all students interested on Monday, February 22nd at 6pm via Zoom.

Student Production of Swing of the Sea takes Center Stage

Center Stage presents a student-run production of Swing of the Sea by Molly Hagan; a story about Boots, a girl who wears yellow rain boots even when it isn’t raining, and a boy called Eggs grieve the death of their best friend Peter. A play about growing old without aging that examines the way fantasy and memory converge when we lose someone we love. Located in the Chapel Theater (172 Calhoun Street), February 17th, 18th, and 20th at 7:30 pm.
