Upcoming NJAC (Not Just Another Club) Meetings!

NJAC (Not Just Another Club) has released a few of its meeting times for the upcoming fall semester!

The REACH program is looking for students to join NJAC. NJAC is a mentoring club on campus that connects mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees participate in a wide range of activities together, including studying, going to the gym, attending sporting events, and just hanging out.

To learn more, attend one of the following club meeting times: Monday, September 19 at 6:30, Wednesday, October 10th at 6:30, and Monday, November 11th at 6:30. (All club meetings are in RSS 249).

Apply to the Change Maker Program

Interested in making CofC a more sustainable community? The Cougar Changemaker Program aims to empower the campus community to create innovative sustainability initiatives through an accessible and well-supported change-making framework.

The Center for Sustainable Development is looking for projects that aim to make the College of Charleston campus more sustainable. Each semester, the Center for Sustainable Development can provide funding for up to $5,000!

The CofC Change Maker Program is a lengthy application, but the first part of the application is due September 26th, 2022. 

This is an amazing opportunity to make a positive local impact and boost your résumé.

Honors Engaged is looking for Project Mentors

With more community partners than ever, Honors Engaged is expanding our student leadership team!

The opportunity: As a project mentor, you will lead and mentor FYE students, and you will develop academically and professionally through your own research in HONS 398.

  • New community partners include Charleston Climate Coalition, Cuisine Rescue; My Sister’s House; YWCA’s Y Girls Code; Our Lady of Mercy’s Neighborhood House; Trident Literacy Association; Charles’ House; Carolina Youth Development Center; Charleston Area Justice Ministry; Office of Student Wellness and Wellbeing; Lowcountry Local First.
  • Returning community partners include The Green Heart Project; Center for Sustainable Development; Communities in Schools; Reading Partners; Kids on Point; The Lonon Foundation; Metanoia

Requirements: To be a project mentor, you must enroll in HONS 398 and be able to meet with the leadership team at one of the following times:

  • Wednesdays, 11-11:50am
  • Wednesdays, 12-12:50pm
  • Fridays, 12-12:50pm.

You must also be able to attend the Project Mentor Retreat on Saturday, September 10th from 9am-2pm.

Great fit for: Students looking to fulfill their Honors Immersed requirement, give back to the Charleston community, and/or add valuable professional/research experience to their resume.

Become an Honors Ambassador and help recruit the Honors College Class of 2027

The Honors College is looking for Honors Ambassadors to provide peer-to-peer recruitment that will help shape the Honors College class of 2027 and determine your future peers in the Honors College.

The opportunity: Honors Ambassadors assist with Honors recruitment events like info sessions, student panels, and sit-downs, and generally serve as the student voice in the Honors admissions process.

Benefits: Ambassadors share their candid lived experiences as a student in the Honors College and provide a personalized touch to the admissions process, gaining professional development, leadership experience, and interpersonal communication skills along the way!

Qualifications:

  • Must be a member of the Honors College in good standing
  • Committed to the values of the Honors College.

Time commitment:

  • approximately 2-5 hours per month for an academic year (flexible based on your schedule)

Responsibilities:

  • Lead individual sit-downs with prospective Honors Students (virtual and in-person)
  • Assist with Honors Information Sessions and participate in student panels
  • Represent the Honors College at different recruitment events
  • Assist with the Honors College Interview Weekend and Honors Experience events
  • Write personalized notes and messages to prospective students
  • Conduct student takeover on Instagram
  • Help manage Class of 2026 GroupMe (engaging with and answering students’ questions)

Requirements to Remain Active:

  • Help with at least one recruitment event in the Fall (Build Your Own Campus Tour)
  • Help with at least one recruitment event in the Spring (Interview Weekend, Honors Experience)
  • Participate in at least two individual meetings with prospective students per semester
  • Assist with at least one info session (virtual or in-person) each semester.
  • Must attend team meetings throughout the year.

The REACH Program has a paid opening for a student assistant

The College’s REACH Program has a paid, year-long student worker position that includes on-campus housing at a reduced rate.

What is the REACH Program? A four-year, fully inclusive certificate program for students with mild intellectual and/or developmental disabilities that promotes the advancement of knowledge and skill in the following areas: Academics; Socialization; Independent Living; Career Development.

The opportunity: Helping to support the incoming freshmen cohort of REACH students in their transition to college by serving as a live-in student assistant.

  • Great fit for: Education majors; students interested in community-building; those with experience working with students with disabilities.

Overview:

The REACH Program at the College of Charleston is a four-year fully inclusive program for students with intellectual disabilities addressing the areas of academics, independent living, social skills development, and career development.

Appointment Length:

August – May (including training prior to working Move-in Weekend and staying for breaks or evacuation until all students have left).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position directly reports to the REACH Program’s coordinator for the freshman cohort.
  • Direct contact with students – 20 hours per week
  • On-Call alternating weekends (This responsibility is offset by half of housing costs paid).
  • Support students with transitioning to college by assisting with:
  • Time management
  • Navigating campus
  • Basic life skills (basic kitchen safety, laundry, etc.)
  • Facilitating lessons in basic life skills
  • Facilitate the students’ campus involvement by:
  • Encouraging involvement in campus activities
  • Assisting with the technology used by the College and professors (Oaks, MyCharleston, etc.)
  • Interpreting syllabi
  • Additional responsibilities include:
  • Supervising curfew and addressing safety concerns
  • Approving off-campus activities
  • Attending weekly meetings with the freshman coordinator
  • Attending monthly meetings with the program’s associate director
  • Maintaining and updating a log of student progress
  • Participating in all training opportunities
  • Providing support for social skill development

Time Requirements & Earnings:

This is a full time Student Assistant position requiring 10 hours of work per week, with estimated earnings of $10.00/hr.

Additionally, the Student Assistant will be provided a room within Kelly House residence hall for REACH freshmen half of housing costs are provided in addition to the earnings mentioned above. As a live-in position, the work week may not be the typical 8:30am-5:00pm working hours and the Student Assistant is expected to have flexible availability throughout the week.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for the Student Assistant position will exhibit responsibility, patience, flexibility, and leadership. A teamwork approach is essential. Excellent verbal communication skills are crucial. As is a dedication to working with the students to increase their independence. Experience with education and/or students with disabilities is preferred. Must be currently enrolled at the College of Charleston and must maintain a full-time student status during the time of employment. Must be in good standing with the College.

CofC’s REACH Program is looking for peer mentors

The College’s REACH Program, a four-year, fully inclusive certificate program for students with mild intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, is looking for current CofC students to serve as peer mentors for the fall 2022 semester.

What to expect: Participate in traditional college activities with your mentee, such as studying, eating meals, attending fitness classes and sporting events, going to the gym, and hanging out with one another.

  • The weekly time commitment is relatively short and flexible within a student’s schedule.

There are still seats remaining in HISP252 Spanish as a Global Language for this fall.

Class premise: The course, which will be taught in English, will explore what makes a language global, and why Spanish is a global language. Students will explore the role that Spanish plays politically, economically, and culturally across the globe.
