Curious about generative artificial intelligence? Check out this opportunity to participate in a Hackathon, take a class on Storytelling with AI, and compete in the IBM 2024 Call for Code Global Challenge for a chance to win $50,000!

The Opportunity: Honors Faculty Fellow Lancie Affonso is hoping to recruit a team of 3-5 CofC students to compete in the April 19th-21st CHS Hack Ops and get feedback on their solution before entering the  IBM 2024 Call for Code Global Challenge. Professor Affonso will also be teaching an exclusive colloquium course in fall 2024 on Storytelling in the Ae of AI.

Timeline:

  • March 29th: Team formed (3-5 students)
  • April 19th-21st: Team participates in CHS HackOps at the Harbor Entrepreneurship Center
  • October 17th: IBM Challenge submissions due
  • December 2024: IBM Challenge winners announced

Reading Partners has an AmeriCorps service opportunity

Apply to Be a Servant Leader Intern at Metanoia Freedom School!

Metanoia Freedom School is looking for students to serve as paid interns helping kids learn over the summer and promote community development in North Charleston!

Metanoia Freedom School: The Freedom School is a six-week long, high-energy summer camp-type environment that teaches students the love of reading and how they can make a difference in themselves, their families, their communities, their country, and their world. It is free, giving hard-working parents a safe and enriching child care option during the majority of the summer.

The Opportunity: Servant leader interns will deliver Reading Curriculum to a small class of no more than 10 students for six weeks during the summer. They will fuel and empower young minds with leadership, literacy, and the power of social change, social action, and social justice. Their mission is to awaken and nurture the potential in scholars aged 5 to 14.

Engage with Community Partners at the Bonner Leader Program’s Engage & Empower Event

Interested in earning some community service hours and helping out local non-profits? Head to the Bonner Leader Program’s “Engage & Empower” event on February 24th!

The Opportunity: During this immersive service experience, students will have the opportunity to learn more about and engage with community partners/organizations such as Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Hope Lodge, Metanoia, and the CofC Gender Sexuality Center. Students will also be able to take part in dialogue and learning more about Charleston and the issues the city faces such as food deserts, K12 education, and more.

Clinic Volunteers Needed at MUSC Neurology Clinic

MUSC is looking for students to volunteer in a clinic setting!

Details: This volunteer position involves volunteering at a clinic located in North Charleston. Neurologists at MUSC volunteer their time one Saturday a month from 8am-12pm to see this patient population. The day of the clinic, you’ll work to manage the front area and flow while patients are waiting for their appointment as well as scheduling follow-up appointments while working with MUSC physicians and medical students.

Benefits: As a volunteer, you’ll work closely with a variety of medical personnel and learn from them. The position involves working to coordinate patient care through the Dream Clinic and MUSC. The is a great opportunity to interact with patients and the professional healthcare providers within the clinic and has potential to be a longitudinal position.

Celebrate Black History Month at CofC with These Opportunities Including Private Dinners with Speakers!

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate, CofC is hosting tons of events and opportunities, including the Office of Institutional Diversity’s Signature Speaker Series!

The Series: Three South Carolina professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences will be featured; each presentation is open to the public and will take place in SSMB 129 at 5:30pm on the dates indicated.

Essay Details: After each public presentation, the Office of Institutional Diversity will host a private dinner with the speaker and a small group of students. Any student interested in having dinner with the speaker is invited to submit an essay explaining your career goals, why you would like to have dinner with the speaker and what you hope to learn. Please submit a separate essay for each speaker. Essays should be submitted to oid@cofc.edu by the deadlines indicated below. Selected students will be notified via email.

Speaker Details:

  • SC Senator Deon Tedder, recently elected and youngest member of the SC Senate, will present about diversity in higher education and civic engagement on February 12th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 5th.
  • Dr. Dante Pelzer, Associate Director of Student Diversity at MUSC, will present about diversity and under-representation in the health professions on February 20th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 13th.
  • Etu Evans, celebrity footwear and accessories designer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. will present on February 22. Essays for this opportunity are due February 14th.
