Become a Student Ambassador and Help Recruit Students of Color and First-Gen Students to CofC!

The Office of Admissions’ Student Ambassador Organization is looking for new student ambassadors to join their team!

The Program: Student Ambassadors is a BIPOC/AALANA student-led organization within the Office of Admissions which focuses on the recruitment and retention of students of color and first-generation students to the College of Charleston.

What Ambassadors Do: Host high school students overnight for a program called MOVE (Multicultural Overnight Visitor Experience) and for Minority Male Initiative (MMI); give campus tours; help out at Accepted Students’ Day.

How to Apply: The application form and instructions are available on Google Forms; the application closes on Wednesday, February 15 at 5 p.m. with interviews to follow on Feb. 17/18.

Ambassador of Switzerland to the US Jacques Pitteloud at CofC

Ambassador of Switzerland to the US Jacques Pitteloud will be at CofC speaking to students on Thursday, February 16th, at 4:30pm in Rita 101.

Jacques Pitteloud has served as Ambassador of Switzerland to the US of America since 2019. He joined the Swiss Foreign Service in 1987. From 1990-1995, he served in the Swiss Strategic Intelligence Service. He acted as a personal advisor to two successive Defence Ministers until 1999.After having been a witness of the Rwanda Genocide in 1994, Dr Pitteloud created an organization dedicated to the task of hunting down and bringing to justice the perpetrators, and he managed to have several of them prosecuted both by the international as well as domestic courts. Ambassador Pitteloud headed the Swiss Delegation to the Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.From 2010 to 2015, Jacques Pitteloud was Swiss Ambassador to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and the Seychelles.Dr Pitteloud earned a Master’s Degree and a Ph.D. from the Law School at the University of Zürich (Master 1986, PhD 1987). He speaks French, English, German, Swiss German, Italian, and Spanish fluently, and he has a basic knowledge of a few other languages.

This is a great opportunity for any students interested in politics and international relations.

2023 Student Entrepreneur of the Year

The Center for Entrepreneurship is looking for applications for the College of Charleston “2023 Student Entrepreneur of the Year.” The winner will be recognized on April 12th at the Tommy Baker Entrepreneurship Hour and receive an award of $1,000 to help grow their business.

Any full-time enrolled student at the College of Charleston is invited to apply by the Sunday, February 12, 2023 deadline.

Additionally, Student entrepreneurs are also eligible to join the Founders Club to help students launch and grow their enterprises by bringing in noted entrepreneurs for mentoring and advice. The Founders Club’s next meeting is this Wednesday, February 1 from 5:00-6:00 in Beatty 120 (the Impact X room on the ground floor of the School of Business).

Charleston 40 is recruiting new Tour Guides!

Charleston 40, College of Charleston’s Tour Guide Association, is currently looking for new members. The purpose of Charleston 40 is to provide tours, represent the campus to any interested person(s), and facilitate the needs of the Office of Admissions. Charleston 40 holds bi-weekly meetings, and new guides are required to give 1 tour per week.

The College Reads Program Discussions

The College Reads Program is hosting several book discussions in the coming weeks.

These discussions will revolve around this past year’s College Reads book How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery, by Clint Smith.

Free copies of How the Word is Passed are available in the Lightsey Center Lobby, Education Center Lobby, Beatty Center Lobby, Rita Hollings Science Center Lobby, the faculty house and the Office of New Student Programs in the Lightsey Center Annex.

All students are invited to attend Clint Smith’s public talk about How the Word is Passed on Monday, October 24 at 7:00pm at Sottile Theatre.

What’s the HSA? A student-run organization dedicated to enhancing the Honors College community for all members through social, academic, and service activities and opportunities.

Where’s it been? The HSA has been relatively low-key over the past few years, but now is the perfect time to revive it!

What type of activities? Previous HSA events include: Pumpkin carving, friendsgiving, exam meltdowns, book swap & sale, val-/pal-/gal-entines, spring semi-formal, senior send-off.

Upcoming NJAC (Not Just Another Club) Meetings!

NJAC (Not Just Another Club) has released a few of its meeting times for the upcoming fall semester!

The REACH program is looking for students to join NJAC. NJAC is a mentoring club on campus that connects mentors and mentees. Mentors and mentees participate in a wide range of activities together, including studying, going to the gym, attending sporting events, and just hanging out.

To learn more, attend one of the following club meeting times: Monday, September 19 at 6:30, Wednesday, October 10th at 6:30, and Monday, November 11th at 6:30. (All club meetings are in RSS 249).
