Where’s the ice cream? You’ll pick up your ice cream at our offices on the first floor of Randolph Hall, suite 102, then enjoy it on the Green Way outside the Honors Center (10 Green Way).

What to expect: Stop by to reconnect with old friends, make some new ones, and enjoy some frozen treats on us!

  • All are welcome, as HSA events are open to all CofC students (so bring your friends!).

No RSVP necessary, just stop by for some frozen fun!

 

Kick-start your semester at Donuts with the Dean

Kick off the first day of classes with breakfast treats and words of encouragement from the Honors College!

What’s Happening: Members of the Honors College team, led by Dean Beth Meyer-Bernstein, will be passing out goodies & beverages and wishing all Honors students good luck as they begin the fall semester.

When and Where: Tuesday, August 20 any time between 8:00 – 9:45 a.m. We’ll be set up on the front porch of 6 Green Way (in Cougar Mall by the fountain).

No RSVP necessary, just stop by. Bring a friend or meet someone new! All are welcome.

Save the Date for the South Carolina Young Voters Summit

Nonpartisan grassroots organization, Be The Ones, in partnership with SOLVE (Southern Coalition for Social Justice) are hosting:

South Carolina Young Voters Summit
Saturday, September 14
12 pm – 4 pm
Downtown Charleston

Over the course of the day, attendees will:

  • Hear from peers & local civic leaders on how they’re organizing in their communities.
  • Get trained on topics like mis/disinformation, relational organizing and voting 101 in SC.
  • Participate in a community service project creating solutions to the barriers young people face in voting.
  • Enjoy good local food, games & activities, and have a ton of fun together!

Great Fit For: South Carolinians 18-30 years old regardless if they are registered to vote, longtime activists, or if this is their first time engaging with civic participation and voting. The event is free for all to attend and will include lunch, snacks & beverages as well as activity & learning resources to take home (and a swag surprise too).

Everything You Need to Know About Honors College Plenary

Here are the details for our annual kick-off event where we welcome the Honors College Class of 2028:

What is it: An annual tradition where we celebrate the beginning of the new academic year and official welcome the newest class of students into the Honors Community. It’s a chance to provide essential information about our plans for the year, Honors policy updates, and a range of opportunities and activities that have been designed with your interests and needs in mind.

When/Where:

Tuesday, August 20
4:00 – 4:45 p.m.
The Sottile Theare (44 George St.)

Who Attends: The event is mandatory for incoming Honors comprehensive students (i.e., students planning to participate in the full, four-year Honors College experience; returning Honors students and incoming ARCH Scholars students don’t need to attend).

The Event is Mandatory? Yup, because we’re sharing important information and resources that will be vital for you to get off to a strong at college, this is a mandatory event. If you’re an incoming Honors College student, you must attend to stay in good standing and retain priority registration status and access to opportunities for honors students.

What if I have a scheduling conflict? We have coordinated with other calendars and schedules on campus so that there should be no significant conflicts with our start time. We understand, however, that there may be a few of you who have unavoidable conflicts. If you believe you have a situation that presents a legitimate conflict, it is vital to request permission to miss this mandatory event well in advance (by August 14th). Please send your request to Mary Moser at moserm@cofc.edu detailing your conflict. We will let you know within 48 hours if your request to miss the event has been approved and will work with you on a solution. For those of you who may be scheduled for a lab on Tuesday, note that labs don’t start until the 2nd week of classes.

Do I have to RSVP? Nope. Simply add the event to your calendar and show up on the 20th. We can’t wait to meet you and get the year started!

Volunteer during Mindful Move-in to support sustainability on campus

The Center for Sustainable Development is looking for volunteers to help with Mindful Move-in!

The Opportunity: Help support Mindful Move-in cardboard recycling collection on August 14th & 16th-18th. Volunteers will help flatten boxes and transport them from collection points at residence halls to recycling dumpsters. Last year, we were able to divert 41% of the waste created over move-in weekend from the landfill.

The Benefits: Get more involved with sustainability on campus! These hours may also count towards volunteer hours.

Join the Honors College Scavenger Hunt and welcome incoming Honors students to campus

Honors students new and old, join us for our annual Honors College Scavenger Hunt!

The Details: A team scavenger hunt for incoming Honors students to help you acclimate to your new home. Each team will be led by returning Honors students, who will help guide you on an excursion around CofC and our neighboring community.

The Date: Sunday, August 18. Here’s the schedule of events:

  • 1:45-2:00 p.m. Meet at Marion Square (look for the big Honors College sign) for instructions and team assignments.
  • 2:00-3:00 p.m. You’re off! The scavenger hunt commences around the downtown area near campus.
  • 3:00-3:30 p.m. Popsicles for everybody at the finish line!

Join us: First year in Honors? Sign up to join a scavenger team. Returning student? Sign up to serve as a guide. All students can register online to participate.
