Interested in earning some community service hours and helping out local non-profits? Head to the Bonner Leader Program’s “Engage & Empower” event on February 24th!

The Opportunity: During this immersive service experience, students will have the opportunity to learn more about and engage with community partners/organizations such as Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, Hope Lodge, Metanoia, and the CofC Gender Sexuality Center. Students will also be able to take part in dialogue and learning more about Charleston and the issues the city faces such as food deserts, K12 education, and more.

The Women and Gender Studies Department is sourcing student submissions to showcase individual work that is related to Women and Gender Studies in their newsletter!

What You Can Submit: You can submit all sorts of things, including:

  • Personal artwork
  • Visual art
  • Poetry
  • Ongoing research
  • Essays
  • Fiction writing
  • Any other student venture that focuses on women and gender in its subject matter!

The Mroz Global Leadership Institute Summit Starts on Thursday, February 22nd!

The Mroz Institute Summit on “Conflict, Cooperation, and Diplomacy: Perspectives on the Middle East, Latin America, China, and Russia” will take place at the College of Charleston on February 22nd and 23rd, 2024!

The Summit: This event brings a tremendous group of distinguished academics and practitioners working on conflict resolution and cooperation in various regions around the world to campus.

Meet with International Economist and Honors alum Patrick Crotty for a coffee conversation

Patrick Crotty ’20, an International Economist at the U.S. International Trade Commission, is visiting campus and will meet with a select group of Honors students for a coffee conversation.

When: Thursday, February 8, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

About Patrick:

  • Researches economic trends in advanced manufacturing sectors for the ITC.
  • Research experience in economic development, foreign policy, real estate/urban economics, and public opinion.
  • Attended Duke University’s M.A. in Analytical Political Economy program.
  • Majored in economics and political science at CofC, where he was a Beatty Scholar, Market Process Scholar, and studied Mandarin Chinese during an intensive, nine-month study abroad in mainland China.

Celebrate Black History Month at CofC with These Opportunities Including Private Dinners with Speakers!

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate, CofC is hosting tons of events and opportunities, including the Office of Institutional Diversity’s Signature Speaker Series!

The Series: Three South Carolina professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences will be featured; each presentation is open to the public and will take place in SSMB 129 at 5:30pm on the dates indicated.

Essay Details: After each public presentation, the Office of Institutional Diversity will host a private dinner with the speaker and a small group of students. Any student interested in having dinner with the speaker is invited to submit an essay explaining your career goals, why you would like to have dinner with the speaker and what you hope to learn. Please submit a separate essay for each speaker. Essays should be submitted to oid@cofc.edu by the deadlines indicated below. Selected students will be notified via email.

Speaker Details:

  • SC Senator Deon Tedder, recently elected and youngest member of the SC Senate, will present about diversity in higher education and civic engagement on February 12th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 5th.
  • Dr. Dante Pelzer, Associate Director of Student Diversity at MUSC, will present about diversity and under-representation in the health professions on February 20th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 13th.
  • Etu Evans, celebrity footwear and accessories designer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. will present on February 22. Essays for this opportunity are due February 14th.

Rotary Global Grants Information Session on February 7th

Considering graduate school outside of the US? Make sure to head to the Rotary Global Grants info session!

Details: Information will be given about the Rotary Foundation’s global grant scholarships, which provide up to $45,000 in funding for graduate programs that align with one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus: promotion of peace, disease prevention, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, education and literacy, economic development, and environmental protection.
