Banned Together: A Documentary Screening & Conversation

Join us for a screening of the documentary Banned Together followed by a short conversation with members featured in the film, students, and local community members.

The Film: A powerful documentary telling the story of three Beaufort, SC, teens who faced down opposition from their own community and battling to bring back banned books and protect the right to read.

The Discussion: This free, nonpartisan event is more than just a film—it’s a chance to engage with a movement that affects all of us. It will be followed by a conversation with members featured in the film, including a current CofC student, community members and others. Snacks will be provided.

Downtown High School Seeking Paid Tutors

Early College High School (ECHS), located downtown at 66 Columbus St., is seeking tutors to support high school students in math, science and Spanish.

About ECHS: We are proud to offer our first generation college students the opportunity to take dual-enrollment courses so that they may earn up to an Associate’s degree by the time they graduate high school.

The Opportunity:

  • Support first generation students in their dual enrollment courses (including Prob Stats, Bio101/102, Anatomy/Physiology, Calculus, Trigonometry, and Spanish101/102)
  • Work 1:1 or in small groups
  • Potential to earn $17/hour (1-7 hours/week)

How to Get Involved: We are able to offer one paid position for $17/hour (apply online through the school district); we’d also welcome additional tutors on a volunteer basis (email Cat Misar, AVID Coordinator, to learn more: catherine_misar@charleston.k12.sc.us)

Calling all South Carolina college students! Compete for thousands in cash prizes 5th Annual SC Innovates Pitch Competition.

How it Works: Students from across SC pitch a promising business idea or social enterprise. 15 semi-finalists from across the state advance to an in-person finale where $10,000 in cash prizes will be doled out.

Great fit for: Everyone! Great ideas aren’t limited by your major. You can enter as an individual or as part of a team with up to four members.

Free Tickets to the Ballet at the Gaillard Center with the Honors Signature Series

Join the Honors College for an internationally renowned ballet performance along with an exclusive pre-concert talk with the performance’s conductor and concertmaster.

The Performance: Set to Carl Orff’s masterful choral score, John Butler’s Carmina Burana is among Richmond Ballet’s most popular works. In partnership with the Charleston Symphony and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus, this monumental performance will bring to life one of the most groundbreaking ballets of the 20th century.

  • We’ll also meet as a group with conductor Erin Freeman and concertmaster Yuriy Bekker before the show for an exclusive discussion about their creative process.

The SC Washington Semester Program is accepting applications for Spring 2025

The Washington Semester Program (WSP) offers South Carolina college students the opportunity to spend a semester working and taking classes in Washington D.C., gaining valuable experience while earning academic credit toward their degrees.

The opportunity: Live/Learn/Work. Students live in a historic Capital Hill neighborhood, explore the city through group excursions, all while taking 15 credit hours.

  • 9 credit hours are applied towards a full-time internship in congressional, executive, judicial or private sector offices, which can be applied towards your Honors Immersed requirement.

Great fit for: Many CofC Honors students have participated and thrived in this program over the years, with backgrounds ranging from political science to economics to international studies to public health. Participants get firsthand experience with the political process, obtaining skills that will help prepare them for careers in virtually any sphere.

Scholarships available: The program allocates support for students who demonstrate financial need and awards over $10,000 each year in scholarships.

The South Carolina Young Voters Summit: Learn how to make an impact at the ballot box

Nonpartisan grassroots organization, Be The Ones, in partnership with SOLVE (Southern Coalition for Social Justice) are bring together passionate young leaders to share ideas, sharpen skills, and have some fun!

The Event: Level up your organizing game, boost advocacy skills, and figure out how to get more of your friends voting. It’s going to be a day packed with hands-on workshops, new connections (and friendship bracelets!), and so much goodness together.

Great Fit For: The event is intentionally curated for South Carolinians 18-30 years old (we love all our community members, but it’s important we create spaces and opportunities for our young leaders).

Call for Student Abstracts: Present your Research at the Tri-County Health Symposium

Are you a student passionate about health equity and disparities? Submit your poster presentation for the Tri-county Health Symposium and share your research on health issues in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

The Opportunity: This symposium is an excellent platform for students to present their academic work, connect with health professionals, and contribute to critical discussions on health equity and disparities. Topics should address health equity, health disparities, and/or health in the Tri-County area. Apply now to showcase your work and make a difference in our community’s health!
