Celebrate Black History Month at CofC with These Opportunities Including Private Dinners with Speakers!

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate, CofC is hosting tons of events and opportunities, including the Office of Institutional Diversity’s Signature Speaker Series!

The Series: Three South Carolina professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences will be featured; each presentation is open to the public and will take place in SSMB 129 at 5:30pm on the dates indicated.

Essay Details: After each public presentation, the Office of Institutional Diversity will host a private dinner with the speaker and a small group of students. Any student interested in having dinner with the speaker is invited to submit an essay explaining your career goals, why you would like to have dinner with the speaker and what you hope to learn. Please submit a separate essay for each speaker. Essays should be submitted to oid@cofc.edu by the deadlines indicated below. Selected students will be notified via email.

Speaker Details:

  • SC Senator Deon Tedder, recently elected and youngest member of the SC Senate, will present about diversity in higher education and civic engagement on February 12th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 5th.
  • Dr. Dante Pelzer, Associate Director of Student Diversity at MUSC, will present about diversity and under-representation in the health professions on February 20th. Essays for this opportunity are due February 13th.
  • Etu Evans, celebrity footwear and accessories designer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. will present on February 22. Essays for this opportunity are due February 14th.
