The Grice Marine Laboratory (GML)is a core facility supporting teaching and research programs for faculty, undergraduate and graduate students in the marine sciences at the College of Charleston. The mission of the laboratory is to provide an environment that promotes the acquisition and the dissemination of knowledge about marine and coastal ecosystems, organisms, processes, environmental aspects, impacts and conservation.
The Grice lab, named in honor of the 14th president of the College, George D. Grice, is located at Fort Johnson on James Island, across Charleston Harbor from downtown Charleston. The facility houses classrooms, student laboratories, research laboratories, faculty offices, an aquarium room, and a research collection of marine invertebrates and fishes.
Supporting teaching and research in marine science is one of the most important functions of the Grice Marine Laboratory. The laboratory also supports undergraduate and graduate student research. Our location on James Island offers the unique opportunity to collaborate and work with a large, diverse group of marine scientists at the Fort Johnson Marine Science Center and provides a hand on setting in which to study and explore a variety of marine ecosystems. Faculty and students are engaged in exploring and understanding the marine environment using everything from traditional field approaches to modern molecular techniques.
