Get Outside!

Earlier this month, I laid out Charleston’s agenda for the Spring. I hope you’ve taken advantage of the events and beautiful weather. But if you haven’t, there are three events scheduled for this weekend and the weather should be sunny and around 70*. Choose your level of participation: you can take a stroll, take a run, or sit and watch world-class tennis matches.

Summerville will host the three-day Flowertown Festival starting this Friday. The festival is free for all, and showcases the talents of many arts and crafts vendors. Be sure to wear your walking shoes because more than 200 vendors will set up their tents and tables along Azalea Park.

You’ll also need some good shoes for the Cooper River Bridge Run. That is, if you’ve already registered. As of March 23, the Bridge Run was sold out. This event is a world-class 10K that starts in Mount Pleasant, crosses the Cooper River on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, and continues down Meeting and King Streets in downtown Charleston. The race concludes in Marion Square with the Finish Festival. There will be lots of entertainment , food and souvenirs for contestants and their cheerleaders. As a side note, if you are not in the race, and have to be in either Mt. Pleasant or downtown Charleston on Saturday, you may want to plan your route in advance and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

Also starting this weekend is the Family Circle Cup, a nine-day tennis tournament on Daniel Island. As its website boasts, “As one of the hottest tickets in professional sports, the Family Circle Cup is more than just a tennis tournament, it’s a festival with some world-class tennis thrown in. During the week, fans are entertained with a variety of activities aimed at making their week on Daniel Island a memorable one. It’s an action packed nine days filled with high-level tennis and a host of other activities that have been created for all age groups from children to senior citizens.”
