Position Summary:  The Green Heart Project seeks a Development and Communications Officer to join our team during an exciting phase of growth, to build a strong base of community support for the Green Heart Project’s mission to grow minds and cultivate community through food. The Development and Communications Officer’s first task will be supporting the final phase of a $2 million capital campaign (currently 60% complete) to build the ½ acre Urban Farm at Enston Home in Downtown Charleston. On an ongoing basis, the Development and Communications Officer will help steward the organization’s growth by engaging Green Heart’s existing donors, sponsors, and volunteers, while exploring new opportunities for the public to engage in the Green Heart Project’s Farm to School programs in the Charleston area.

The ideal candidate is excellent at project management and passionate about rallying community members in support of education, human and environmental health, and community development. As part of a small organization, the candidate is a team player and able to understand all of the components of the organization, to see the bigger picture and communicate our mission to the public.

This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Development Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

Development

  • Work with Executive Director and Development Director to manage & coordinate the Green Heart Project’s $2 million capital campaign
  • Work with Executive Director and Development Director to create and execute strategic annual fundraising plan to engage community support and raise funds to support the Green Heart Project’s mission, including annual appeals, events, and strategic solicitation campaigns
  • Cultivate, steward and assist in solicitation of existing and prospective donors
  • Administer Green Heart’s online donor management system (Blackbaud eTapestry)
  • Coordinate Green Heart Project staff and volunteers to execute fundraising events
  • Engage & coordinate volunteer groups in Green Heart programs and gardens

Communications

  • Work with Executive Director and Development Director to create and execute comprehensive communications plan for fundraising and development, including public relations, online giving, digital (website / email / social media) and print communications
  • Create and disseminate literature for donors, business sponsors, and volunteers
  • Assist with grant writing, with support from Executive Director and Program Director
  • Implement donor acknowledgement and recognition plan, including gift receipts, public recognition via email and web, and visible recognition in garden spaces
  • Coordinate the Green Heart Project’s presence at events, rallying staff and volunteers to table at fairs and give presentations to prospective volunteer and donor groups

Other

  • Work closely with entire Green Heart staff to ensure program and development initatives are integrated and aligned
  • Assist with any and all organizational activities (programs, events, garden upkeep) as needed

Desired Skills & Qualifications: 

  • At least 2 years experience in non-profit fundraising, communications, or business development
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent at building and maintaining strong and strategic relationships
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects and juggle multiple priorities
  • Affinity for the Green Heart mission of growing minds and cultivating community through food
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, with guidance from a supervisor
  • Excellent team player
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and social media applications
  • Experience with sales / donor / project management software, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferred
