With Who: National Public Radio (NPR)
Location: Remote
Dates: Fall 2020
Position Description: The NPR Training team supports high-quality journalism and storytelling at NPR and Member stations. Public media journalists are busier than ever — and their jobs keep evolving. In this environment, it can be difficult to hone storytelling techniques, learn new tools, and find the space and guidance to experiment. The NPR Training Team exists to make all of that happen.
The team is multiplatform and offers training in audio and digital storytelling, audio production, social media, diversity, editing and more. Our training takes many forms: in-person workshops, webinars, visits to NPR Member stations and industry conferences. We also manage a growing list of career development initiatives that complement our editorial training.
The team shares best practices and tips on its website, npr.org/training. The site is an open and growing resource that has found new audiences outside of public media, including journalism students and educators, other news organizations and non-profits.
Intern Responsibilities:
-
NPR Training manages a wide range of training and staff development programs for the newsroom and the wider public radio system. We’ll look to the graphic design intern to create an inventory of visuals that help us promote these programs.
-
The intern will serve as the primary designer for a range of visual materials, from concept to execution. Responsibilities include designing logos and building creative assets, creating marketing handouts and slide templates for internal programs and public events, and designing visuals for our social media platforms and Training site.
-
You will be expected to conduct visual research, produce conceptual designs, work with the Training team to incorporate feedback, and meet deadlines. You may also be asked to assist with other Training team projects, including events, conference planning, and more.
-
You will have the opportunity to shadow and learn from NPR’s Marketing, Branding, and Communications staff and NPR’s Digital Media and Design departments.
Required Skills:
-
You should be proficient in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects. You should also have an interest in journalism and a portfolio with graphic design work (bonus points if you have a background or strong interest in professional development and/or education).
-
The NPR Training team is a collaborative unit, and our interns are expected to weigh in on the team’s work and contribute their own ideas. You should be a team player, an organized self-starter used to juggling multiple projects, and excited to experiment with new material. Even though this is a visual position, you also need strong written and verbal communication skills.
-
The Training team works closely with various departments across NPR, making it essential that you be able to communicate concepts to cross-disciplinary teams. Finally, you should be passionate about public media and the opportunity to help its journalists elevate their craft.
