With Who: National Public Radio (NPR)

Position Description: Embedded is NPR’s documentary news podcast. We do deep, narrative dives into the lives of the people living the news; Whether it’s a journalist covering gang violence in Central America, or a town in a bitter legal battle over the golf course of a future president.
Rough Translation is NPR’s long-from, narrative podcast about far away stories that hit close to home. The show works closely with NPR’s International Desk and foreign correspondents.
Both podcasts have some exciting projects in the works and are looking for a curious, eager, smart intern to help us create these shows. This internship is an opportunity to work with award-winning teams on all aspects of podcast production — including scouting for stories, booking interviews, conducting pre-interviews and interviews, research, writing and assembling drafts, editing audio, and scoring. Additionally the intern will learn how to promote the episodes on social media.
Intern Responsibilities:
- Conduct research for stories we’re working on
- Log taped interviews and/or correct computer-aided transcriptions
- Call and pre-interview potential guests
- Book guests and arrange interviews via phone, Zoom, tape syncs, ISDN, etc.
- Pitch ideas and provide feedback at editorial meetings
- Monitor and publish on Embedded and Rough Translation’s social media accounts
- Write digital copy for NPR.org versions of stories
- Monitor the Embedded and Rough Translation inbox for feedback and tips from listeners
- Mix audio for promos
- Assist in fact-checking
- Give feedback on unfinished episodes in group edits
- Find archival tape for episodes
Required Skills:
- Strong interest in longform journalism
- Curious about the news, current events and surprising ways to shed light on them
- Can handle multiple long-term projects and tasks at once
- Proficient on social media platforms, especially Twitter
- Knowledge and comfort with ProTools is preferred but not required
Preferred Skills:
- Devours podcasts and thinks a lot about audio journalism
- Audio production experience is a plus but not required
