CofC Marketing and Communications: Seeking Art Director

Salary:  *$40,575 – $47,734

Position Description:  Working collaboratively with the Senior Director of Marketing, the position directs and oversees the creative direction, conceptual design and design production for publications produced by the Advancement Communications team for the College of Charleston. The focus of this position is that of a creative and conceptual nature, in the development and production of print and multi-media materials designed to impact the College’s overall brand and philanthropic appeal.

Minimum Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art or visual communication and 3 years of progressively responsible experience managing and executing all phases of the creative process, including concept, design, layout, typography, photo shoots and printing is required. Experience in graphic design and the creation of publications and marketing materials, and experience in higher education is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Ability to produce publications and other materials that are of exceptional quality, distinctly different in style yet still within the same general family and within budget. Desktop publishing and pre-press skills are essential. Macintosh computer experience with expertise in the use of Adobe Creative Suites (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) is required. Extensive knowledge of and experience with design principles and techniques, color theory and printing processes and procedures. Knowledge of web design and production experience a plus. Must be able to manage multiple tasks, from creative process through production, effectively, within deadlines and budget, and develop effective working relationships with campus constituents, print vendors, photographers and paper representatives.

Additional Comments Regarding Position:  Must possess good interpersonal skills, be able to serve as a consultant for upper-level management as appropriate and be sensitive to values and procedures of an academic institution. Some overnight travel may be required to supervise photo shoots and conduct press checks.

Job Duties: 

  • 35%: Responsible for the execution of complex and cohesive short- and long-term strategic marketing campaigns and programs that have an impact on the College’s efforts to recruit and retain donors. Confers with upper-level management on strategies and concepts, and directs and manages the visual components of the campaigns from creative concepts, to the art direction and production of marketing communications materials. These materials include both print and electronic formats.
  • 25%: Provide expert advice to the Senior Director of Advancement Communications and the Executive Director of Communications. Manages the visual message of the College and consults with and/or directs colleagues so that consistency of that message is maintained throughout all strategic marketing campaigns and programs.
  • 25%: Make decisions about the most effective creative concepts used to increase community engagement with the College, and oversee the creative concepts, design, production, quality and overall look of materials produced by the Advancement Communications. Ensure that all projects are within established budgets. Establish and review correct use of the logo and brand elements on all materials.
  • 10%: Manage all phases of production from the bidding process through final printing. Check all proofs, evaluate color corrections and attend press checks when required. Consult with and ensure that colleagues keep up-to-date on latest marketing trends, and continually research industry trends so that Marketing and Communications is using the most effective print and electronic communications to build the brand of the institution and increase philanthropic giving.
  • 5%: Provide guidance and support efforts of members of the campus community to create materials according to brand guidelines.
