Charleston Water System: Seeking Communications Intern (Summer 2020)

Location:  Charleston, SC (St. Philip St., downtown)

Dates:  Summer 2020

Compensation:  $16.00/hr – $18.00/hr (Depending on qualifications and class ranking.)

Hours:  8 AM and 5 PM (flexible)

Position Description:   (This is a paid internship.) Assist Communications team in developing and implementing a robust community outreach/education program.

Primary Duties:  

  • Developing presentation materials.
  • Developing presentation demonstrations.
  • Proactively contacting organizations to book appearances.
  • Coordinating and fulfilling request appearances.
  • Assist in preparation and/or execution of Citizens Academy program.

Additional Duties: Other related duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:  

  • Currently enrolled in 3rd (Junior) or 4th (Senior) year of undergraduate studies or a Graduate student working on a Master’s degree in any of the following degree programs: Communications / Public Relations / Marketing / Education / Environmental Science / Public Administration / Public Health / Environmental and Sustainability Studies / General Studies, or someone with a passion to educate the community about public water services or wastewater management.
  • Prior work record indicating dependability and conscientiousness.
  • Must have well-developed writing, editing, and grammatical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements, Activities, and Working Conditions:  

  • Sedentary work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly maneuver and transport objects.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, desk and cellular telephone, radio, fax, copy machines, and calculator.
  • Ability to visually observe computer screens, printer and keyboard to receive and send information.
  • Ability to receive and give complex written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and handle documents.
  • General office environment, but must be able to wear Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) to perform required essential functions.

Training Needs:  

  • OSHA and Departmental safety training as required.
  • Skills Based Training.
  • Standard Operating Instruction (SOI) per department requirements.
  • ISO 14001 standards for department and company.
