American Lung Association in South Carolina
Development/Health Promotions Internship
Responsibilities: The American Lung Association (ALA) in South Carolina implements many programs in the Charleston area, including healthy air initiatives, asthma education programs, lung disease research, and smoking cessation clinics. A major role of staff is obtaining the funds to implement these programs. Much of these funds are raised through events. We have three major events in the Charleston area: the Fight for Air Climb is a fitness event held at the North Charleston Coliseum in the summer, the “Lowcountry Dancing with the Stars” Oxygen Ball is a formal gala held at the Charleston Marriott in early spring, and the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk is held at Folly Beach in the fall.
Summer and Fall interns will primarily help with planning of the Fight for Air Climb and the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk. Roles may include marketing the event, updating our social media pages with event information, coordinating event setup and activities, researching possible sponsorship opportunities, recruiting teams and volunteers to participate in the event, entering information into our data management system, website design, and helping with other logistics.
The intern may also help with other projects that come up. The intern will be asked to complete basic office administrative tasks such as making phone calls, filing documents, mailing letters, and data entering.
This is a non-paid position.
Hours: The intern may work 8-10 hours each week through the 14 week period. Hours will be flexible.
Skills: The intern should have excellent written and oral communication skills. He/she should be proficient in Microsoft Office, organized, and detail-oriented. Professional demeanor in dealing with the public is a must.
Location: The internship will take place at the American Lung Association in South Carolina’s office at 44-A Markfield Drive in Charleston (West Ashley).
Travel: No long distance travel will be involved. If the intern is willing, they may be asked to complete some tasks that require local travel. They will be reimbursed for their mileage.
