Bonus Prompt: Sue Lee thesis

The Sue Lee thesis seems to shed light on various parts of the story and how terms such as globalism  play a role in society. The article begins with denouncing the notion of globalism as a possible working social construct and breaks down scenes in which the author of Tropic of Orange paints a picture of how the world tries to forcibly integrate this way of living. Globalism, is a way of thinking or conducting policies that place the interest of the entire world above the interests of an individual nation. Throughout the article this social construct is “picked at” by displaying ways in which globalism isn’t really implemented in society but widely looked at as a harmonious and adoptable ideology. The article also correlates globalism to the idea of global village. Though as a whole countries don’t really uphold the idea. In small communities people such as Buzzworm still try to live their lives in way that supports upholding a community more than just one’s self. He describes how though we all are complex and come from different backgrounds we have a harmonious tick that requires us to act on the deeds we need to do to contribute to the community. Our time must be spent wisely and one must not be selfish.“everybody’s got a timepiece and a piece of time. Watch was an outward reflection of your personal time” (Yamashita 86). This reflection also is elaborated in a global sense that we all experience time in  a certain way and we can appreciate the stories of how others spend their time to better respect them and in turn they respecting you. This also applies to the worldly sense of accepting responsibility to heed to all than just one’s individual needs.

I like your idea here that Buzzworm, if anyone, tries to revive that authentic sense of the global village, perhaps not in the phony sense of false proximity, but in the way in which magic conspires to literally bring worlds crashing together in the homeless encampment along the freeway. Of course, this more authentic vision ultimately falls apart as well, but it is a compelling vision nonetheless. Great response!
