Noah is a poor country boy, who works in a lumber yard. Allie is a well-educated, wealthy city girl, who comes from a well established family. The two met the summer after highschool and instantly fell in love. Allie and Noah were each other’s first loves, who lost each other, yet got back together, proving they couldn’t deny “true love”. Allie and Noah are characters from the famous movie, The Notebook, which was originally a novel. The on-screen chemistry shows the characters passion for their love, yet they are met with unfortunate circumstances.
Allie left for college, while Noah stayed in the country, forcing them to break up. They both went on with their individual lives, but both couldn’t get the other out of their minds. Allie got engaged to a nice man, and planned on living a happy life with him. Meanwhile, Noah spent years of his life, after fighting in war, restoring a house. Even though Noah and Allie were no longer in contact, Noah kept his promise that he would build Allie’s dream house. Allie went to go see for herself, and was shocked to see that Noah kept his word. Noah and Allie exchanged moments of sincerity which led them to recconnect. Allie had an affair with Noah, realized the reality that the life she sought for herself, might not be where her heart is. Allie is faced with a choice of whether she should choose Noah, her true love, or her fiance, who provides security.
This scene from the movie is a fight between Noah and Ally. Noah told Allie that he still is in love with her, and that he did this grand gesture to show his love. Allie is still unsure of what she wants, and Noah is trying to convince Ally to make up her mind, and make the choice that she truly wants, without regarding anyone else in the decision. Noah truly believes that he and Ally have “true love”, and that Allie’s fiance is providing her with what everyone else expects of her. Noah is pressuring Ally to make a decision on the spot, but Ally is upset and confused about what she wants.
Noah’s main argument is that he is truly meant for Ally, and that she knows it deep down. He appeals to her emotions of love and regret. He told Allie ‘You’re bored and you know it”. Allie being “bored” means that she doesn’t excite her like Noah or gives her what she truly wants. Noah realizes that if Allie chooses her fiance then she would be settling and be with who everybody expects her to be with. Both Alllie and Noah understand this throughout this argument, but Noah is trying to convince Allie to do what she truly wants to do, despite what everyone else thinks. Also, he knows that deep down Allie regrets losing the love they once had when they were younger, because she’s never felt anything like it. This feeling has always been with Allie, even with new romances. Noah has a point that she is “bored” without him, because she hasn’t felt anything as exciting as she did when she was with him.
Noah comes off as aggressive and compassionate. One example of this would be when Noah slammed the car door on Allie, so she couldn’t leave. He yells at her and is pressuring her to decide what she wants. He shows how much he loves her by getting frustrated with the situation that they are in. By doing this he is showing his need for Allie to make this decision. He shows off his vulnerability to Allie by laying out exactly how he feels. He forces Allie to listen to him and make a decision, although she is not entirely sure of what she wants.
Allies comes to realize the sincerity behind Noah’s actions, and that she would have to come to terms with what she wants for herself. This builds up her anger as she doesnt know what to do in this situation.
From all the frustration and confusion going on in this conversation, Noah shows how hurt he feels. He expresses to Allie his desperation, for he waited all this time, and devoted years of his to her, with the uncertainty of whether he would be with her or not. This adds to Noah’s argument, because Ally doesn’t want to hurt her feelings. They both have held so much regret from their relationship in the past, and they don’t want to have the feeling for the rest of their lives. Throughout this argument they keep in mind the past they had, and how much hurt they both went through.
In conclusion, the argumentative “story” in this scene is that Allie should choose Noah over her fiancé. Noah uses his genuine connection and past with Allie to convince her that she should stay with him. Noah shows how much he cares about Allie and is compassionate with her about the seriousness. Allie has to understand that there are pro’s and con’s to both men. Her fiance would provide more stability for the relationships and financially. Though, Noah brings more emotions and excitement.
