Through Their Eyes: A Visual Journey of Student Mental Health (Remix and Essay)

I made the decision to remix my EAC, which addresses young adults’ mental health and looks into strategies to lower the number of mental health disorders. My text simplifies “The quality of attention to the experience is what is of importance here—without judgment and with interest as the process evolves from moment to moment (Kabat-Zinn, 2012).” In my photo essay, the audience I intend to attract is the general public, Mental Health Professionals, and students/researchers.

This audience consists of people who are interested in learning more about mental health concerns, those who know an individual who does, or those who have personal experience with mental illness. My photo essay which examines the lived experiences of people with mental illness may also be of interest to psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals. My photo essay about mental health sickness can be used as a teaching tool for students majoring in psychology, sociology, public health, or similar subjects to help them comprehend the complex nature of mental health and how it affects both individuals and communities.

My first inspiration for my photo essay on mental health was a desire to use visual storytelling to create empathy, understanding, and awareness. Using my own experiences, interactions with people who have experienced mental illness, and my own observations of how society views mental health, I tried to craft a story that would convey the multifaceted nature of the human psyche.

I started my research by looking into current works of literature, documentaries, and visual art that dealt with mental health. I studied books, academic papers, and internet sites to expand my knowledge of all the different aspects of “peer bullying, and gender-based violence and victimization (Grossman and D’Augelli, 2007’ encompassing its societal ramifications, origins, symptoms, and therapies. In addition to giving me a firm basis in the subject, this initial study assisted me in identifying the main themes and narratives I wanted to explore in my photo essay.

I interviewed people who had personally experienced mental illness as well as mental health professionals, advocates, and caregivers in addition to my academic research.  These discussions gave the project a sense of authenticity and human connection in addition to offering insightful opinions and ideas. Having firsthand experiences of the struggles and victories related to mental health increased my empathy and motivated me to tackle the project with sensitivity and consideration.

I looked at the work of other photographers and visual storytellers who have taken on related subjects as I dug deeper into the research process. Their methods, aesthetic decisions, and narrative strategies were studied in order to assist my creative vision and create a distinct visual language for my photo essay. I experimented with various compositions, lighting setups, and photographic styles to provoke feelings, deliver ideas, and produce an engaging visual story.

The capacity of my photo essay to evoke strong feelings and tell compelling stories through visual images is one of its best features. Every image provides a window into the real-life struggles of those dealing with mental illness, revealing moments of vulnerability, resilience, and hope. I tried to arouse empathy and connection through deliberate framing and composition, allowing viewers to get fully immersed in the stories that were being told. My project’s dedication to offering a range of viewpoints and experiences related to mental health is another one of its strong points. My photo essay honors the diversity and complexity of the human experience, showcasing everything from genuine moments of joy and connection to photographs of people fearlessly facing their inner demons. I want to remove biases, knock down barriers, and promote a society that is more accepting and caring by presenting a variety of voices and stories.

Photo 1: “The Mask”

“Every grin has a backstory. Many students hide their mental health issues behind a happy front that betrays their inner pain.” In the first picture, a student is seen with friends in a busy college environment and grinning broadly. But if you look closely, you can find traces of stress or grief in their body language or gaze, which suggests that they are struggling beneath the surface.

Photo 2: “The Weight of Expectations”

“Students’ mental health may suffer as a result of the pressure to succeed. It can be quite difficult to deal with peer pressure, self-imposed norms, and academic expectations.” This picture, which represents the burdensome weight of academic demands, shows a student drowning in schoolwork, self-doubt, and tasks. Their look conveys weariness, tension, and a feeling of suffocation from the demands of social life, assumption, and student life.

Photo 3: “Seeking Solitude”

“For students experiencing mental health issues, taking breaks from the chaos and finding some alone time can be crucial.” These periods of contemplation, art, or nature provide comfort and rejuvenation.” This image shows a student sitting by herself in a field, lost in thought and trying to win over others who don’t seem to care. Her calm look emphasizes the value of self-care and taking breaks from the hectic schedules of students by projecting a sense of serenity and reflection.

Photo 4: “Breaking the Stigma”

“obtaining help and speaking up are brave deeds, not signs of weakness. Eliminating the stigma associated with mental health encourages students to ask for help and fosters a compassionate and understanding community.” In this picture, parents and students are gathered together and having a discussion about mental health. They challenge the stigma and silence around mental illness and promote a sense of community and connection among friends and loved ones by expressing empathy, support, and unity through their body language and facial expressions.
