This was very interesting! I was not even aware that sniffing the cork in restaurants was a common practice. I think that the fact that this has been proven as a common misconception may become a new way for wine enthusiasts to determine if their dinner company is actually into wine as much as they claim, or putting on airs – if their company sniffs the cork while acting impressed, they may be able to tell that they are not as well-read and educated on wine.
I found this article to be super interesting because I have actually never heard of smelling the cork before drinking the wine. I feel like this is just a way for some people to pretend like they know more about wine even if they don’t, which could be cool to do around those who are clueless about wine but maybe not so much around the somms!
I have been told two different things when it comes to sniffing the cork. I was first told that you can sniff it because it’ll tell you some history and then I learned that you do not have to sniff the cork.
