Join WGS and friends for a special screening of Que Sea Ley (Let it Be Law), a documentary film that debuted at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival that chronicles the ongoing struggle for abortion rights in Argentina.

Film screening plus remarks and a Q&A session with Dr. Julia McReynolds-Perez (Sociology/WGS).

Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative – This summer, be a part of a transformational experience that goes beyond just another internship. Through hands-on activities and original research, you will contribute to a national effort to share a diversity of women’s voices from the past and present. You will learn to use unique tools for civic engagement and representation in museum and other community spaces. You will develop familiarity and experience with museum practice and American women’s history. 

  • Who? Undergraduate and recent graduates with a commitment to women’s history 
  • What? Eight-week long cohort internship experience, with paid group housing, reimbursable travel to and from Washington D.C., and a weekly $382.50 stipend. The total value of this internship, including the weekly stipend and the paid group housing, is $6,300 (not including travel reimbursement). 
  • Where?  Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. 
  • When? June 14 – August 8, 2020 
  • Why? Opportunity to explore various career paths, networks, leadership and mentorship experiences, and build practical professional skills.

STUDENT AWARD OPPORTUNITY: LCWA Public Service Internship Award – 

Awarded to support increasing student interest and participation in public service, especially foreign service and/or globally focused civil service internships. Students will be awarded $3,000-$5,000 for programs that directly related to public, foreign, or civil service.  

  • Requirements: Open to all majors, 3.0 GPA required and must be in good disciplinary standing with the College, and evidence provided of acceptance/participation to an internship or program  
  • All materials must be submitted by the deadline of Wednesday, March 11!

Waring Lecture: “From Black Bodies to Black Body Politic: Black Carolinians, Health, Healers and History” (3/5)

  • March 5 – 2020 Waring Lecture featuring Dr. Bernard Powers, Jr. – “From Black Bodies to the Black Body Politic: Black Carolinians, Health, Healers and History” – 5:30pm in MUSC’s Drug Discovery Building Auditorium (70 President Street) – Dr. Powers will discuss the nature and complicated history of health and healthcare for African Americans in South Carolina. Dr. Bernard Powers Jr. has worked in higher education for approximately forty years. For twenty-six years he was a professor of history at the College of Charleston teaching courses in American, African American, and African diasporic history.  In 2018 he became the College’s founding director for the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston. He earned his Ph. D in American history at Northwestern University and has been a board member for the International African American Museum since its inception.  Today he serves as the International African American Museum’s interim CEO and president.

GSEC & WREN Event: “Collective Day of Action for Bodily Autonomy” – 2/19

GSEC is partnering with WREN for the Collective Day of Action for Bodily Autonomy at the SC Statehouse, Feb 19th. WREN will provide bus transportation and lunch for a CofC team of students, faculty and staff who want to spend the day in Columbia. We will have the chance to observe the legislative process, meet lobbyists and community activists from across the state, and raise our voices for reproductive justice and trans-inclusive health care!
