- March 5 – 2020 Waring Lecture featuring Dr. Bernard Powers, Jr. – “From Black Bodies to the Black Body Politic: Black Carolinians, Health, Healers and History” – 5:30pm in MUSC’s Drug Discovery Building Auditorium (70 President Street) – Dr. Powers will discuss the nature and complicated history of health and healthcare for African Americans in South Carolina. Dr. Bernard Powers Jr. has worked in higher education for approximately forty years. For twenty-six years he was a professor of history at the College of Charleston teaching courses in American, African American, and African diasporic history. In 2018 he became the College’s founding director for the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston. He earned his Ph. D in American history at Northwestern University and has been a board member for the International African American Museum since its inception. Today he serves as the International African American Museum’s interim CEO and president.
