App of the Week: AirSketch

Turn your iPad into a wireless whiteboard! Annotate PDF documents and images live.  You can project PDF documents such as exported PowerPoints, to a computer on the same local network then annotate them in real time. Airsketch works like a mirror image of your iPad (viewed inside of the Airsketch App) that is projected by another computer through a shared website.

In other words, it does not connect your iPad wirelessly through the projector — it allows you to display your Airsketch to a website, which is projected by another computer.

For example, when you open Airsketch on the iPad, there is a small wireless icon in the bottom left. When you select that icon, it gives you the IP address that your display can be seen. When you open Firefox (or another web browser) on a classroom computer and put that address in the URL, you will see the same screen as on the iPad.

From there, you can display PDFs (but not PPTs unless they are converted to PDFs) via Dropbox; select the Send-To icon in Dropbox located in the upper right. You can also show images on your iPad’s camera roll.

Are you looking for an easy to use, collaborative whiteboard app that works on all tablets, phones, AND computers? Check out AWW: a web whiteboard (https://awwapp.com). Recommended by Sarah Davis in Teacher Education (EHHP), it allows you and your students to collaborate through drawing.  Sarah used it to online tutor her niece in math.  It’s great for writing, math, brainstorming, anything that can be done by drawing or writing.

It also couldn’t be easier to use if it had to be.  Just go to https://awwapp.com and click Start Drawing.  Once in the board just share the link with your users via email or a tweet and you’re on your way to collaboration.

Dr. Barfield is a professor in Health & Human Performance.  As a result of the 2013 Faculty Technology Institute he implemented AirSketch in his classes.

I use Air Sketch in kinesiology and personal and community health (summers) and plan to begin using in biomechanics class.  The Air Sketch (app) allows me to make notes on PowerPoint slides in real time and can even have the students participate (by having them write on the slides). It is especially helpful when I walk around the room and can make points from anywhere (without being tethered to the teacher station by a cable).  I think the students think it is cool too the I can actually use technology, simple as it may be.
