Day 2 Summer Gayles

*I awoke at 7am and headed downstairs for breakfast at the hotel. The staff was very welcoming and patient with my Spanish attempts.

*After sitting out on the balcony, I noticed how compact the housing across from us was. Barcelona really optimizes space in terms of apartments and condo structures. It kind of reminds me of the housing setup in Charleston(only slightly)

*After about 30 minutes of searching for the company we’re touring, we finally persevered!

*My Study abroad group arrived at a local Catalonian logistics company named “Estoko”

*Upon being here, I talked briefly with several logistics companies.

*Estoko is a very flexible/disposable warehouse supplier with 400+ active warehouses in Spain’s mainland

*The company’s owner was kind enough to talk with us about possible company expansion to other European countries and the efforts being made to help “green logistics”. The company prides itself on reducing CO2 emissions and avoiding unnecessary new logistics infrastructures.

*We later had lunch as a group which was great.

*After lunch we explored the biggest market in Barcelona. This market was full of both locals and tourists.

*Lastly, we went to La Sagrada Família. The sacred church has been being built since the 1800s. Such a beautiful eye-opening experience as our guide Margo explained the religious meanings behind each sculpture!

Day 1 – Nik Dogger

July 6, 2023

After, arriving in Barcelona I was beyond happy to see people related to home. After being sick the past few days, alone in a foreign country, it was a HUGE relief to meet people I had never met. Oddly enough, everyone felt familiar at the same time solely because they were a connection to home, something I hadn’t had in the past 2 weeks. After arriving at the hotel, we had the opportunity to meet Marga who seemed very passionate about our tours and cultural immersion in Barcelona. Afterwards, we decided to wander around and shop a good bit. We had to figure out the way of the roads and as a group we were a bit confused even with apple maps. Eventually we went shopping at HM, Zara, and a large designer mall. It was a fun way to spend our free time while walking around and getting to know each other. We parted ways to allow us all to fit in taxis and Matt and I ended up heading straight to the restaurant which allowed us to take in the scenery, streets, and historical buildings surrounding the hotel. Dinner was amazing and the company was even better! I particularly enjoyed walking around with Dr. G and telling angry men to high five each other, probably the highlight of my day. I am so excited to spend more time with this group and for the amazing experiences to come!

Day 3 – Saturday Matthew Durigon

On this fine Saturday in Barcelona, we woke up from our night out late in the morning and went to a local cafe for some café. After we got ready for a beautiful park visit. We went and enjoyed our time, exploring more and more of Barcelona each day. After we took a nice rest and got ready for dinner with Nik, Elizabeth, and Mae. We went to a club after to explore more of Barcelona nightlife.

Day 2 – Friday Matthew Durigon

Good evening Dr. Gonzalez,
Day 2 with the crew was a little shaky but we ended on a high note. I woke up early and got breakfast, went on a run, and wasn’t allowed a second breakfast unfortunately. All jokes aside we went to a Logistics startup called Estoko and was greeted by a man named Rafael who explained what his startup did. I really enjoyed the bit on decarbonization and how they tackle pollution in their own scale compared to making drastic changes to their systems to meet ecofriendly regulations. After we had a great lunch and was introduced to Catalan style Chicken. We visited the largest market in Barcelona after and went to Sagrada Familia andd got to see the excellent sights and rich history of the church. The church provided beautiful pictures and my family was happy to see them. We’re going out as a group tonight and will update you tomorrow on how Night 2 went in Barcelona!

Day 1 Summer Gayles

*To begin, I had a very eventful traveling experience. My layover landed later than expected so I ran all the way to my gate just to find out that my final flight to Barcelona was delayed. All the running was for nothing. But upon boarding, I had a flight full of rest and peace
*Once I arrived, I was greeted by 3 of my study abroad mates. it was my first time meeting them and being in Spain but we bonded and navigated our hotel efficiently.
*After arriving at the hotel, I met my roommate Nik. We clicked instantly and then headed down to orientation.
*After consulting with the professors and our guide, I realized this will be an eventful trip!
*After orientation, we explored the city and bonded over shopping.
*I am excited to see what tomorrow awaits. I’ve already learned so much about Spain’s driving techniques and societal norms.

Day 4

Day 4: 7/9/23
Mae and I slept in this morning which was really refreshing. We then took the metro to a tapas restaurant where we both ordered the tapas tester which included six different tapas dishes, all very yummy. After eating, we walked around and did some shopping. Once we finished shopping, we went to a nearby gelato shop, I ordered pistachio and waffle gelato! Then we headed back to the hotel to change and go to dinner. Unfortunately, we did not realize that on Sunday all of the restaurants would be closed by 11pm. So, we had to go to a nearby pub, but thankfully the food was still good.

Day 1 – Thursday Matthew Durigon

Good evening Dr. Gonzalez,
For the very first blog post of our trip, I wanted to talk about my experience getting to where we will call home for the next 2 weeks. I had a very nice man on my flight from ATL -> BCE named Stephen. Stephen was from Vietnam, and we talked about finance and logistics, and he introduced me to international travel tips. Once we landed, I bud him farewell and got into an Uber with 3 fellow classmates on the way to the hotel. We arrived, checked in, and got lunch at a local cafe. Once everyone’s else arrived we had our group orientation where we got to learn the ropes with our tour guide for our trip. We went shopping after to buy some outfits to fit in with the locals and had a wonderful dinner with everyone. Great start to the trip and making everyday like it’s my last!

Day 3

Day 3: 7/8/23
This morning I woke up early to go for a run and I must say that the sunrise was absolutely wonderful. After my workout I grabbed some coffee and a croissant for breakfast. Around 2pm we all, as a group, headed via metro to visit a local park where we walked around and ate some lunch. After that, we all split to spend the rest of our afternoon however we pleased. Mae, Nik, and I walked around a couple shops in the area and then headed back to the hotel where we got ready for dinner. We had dinner at a delicious restaurant nearby.

Day 2

Day 2: 7/7/2023
This morning I woke up feeling very refreshed from my jet lag yesterday and headed down to the lobby for a nice breakfast. After breakfast the group got dressed and we headed off to our first business visit at a young logistics company named Estoko. Estoko is a logistics company that focuses on purchasing flexible and elastic warehouses for low prices and selling stocks/pallets for a profitable price. Estoko also prioritizes completing front desk warehousing operations, providing green logistics including decarbonization, and their server includes could-based architecture and artificial intelligence. Although Estoko has only been an operating company for two years they are already a profitable company and have four hundred plus warehouse spaces. At our visit we also took a tour of their 3D printers which were so cool. It blows my mind that a printer can now create concrete objects. Just a few examples of the things they create include a travel size saxophone, sunglasses, chess pieces, and various toys. After our visit we took the metro to have lunch at an authentic Spanish restaurant. I ordered the Catalan chicken which was so delicious. Then we went to the largest market in Barcelona with our guide Marga who took us on a tour of all the unique shops. Lastly, we visited a beautiful cathedral named La Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. It was such a beautiful place and I enjoyed observing the gothic architecture and listening to Marga telling us about the history of the site. Overall, it was a great second day in Barcelona and I cannot wait to see what the third holds!

Day 1

Day 1: 7/6/2023

After a long plane ride of unfortunately no sleep, Mae and I arrived in Barcelona around 8:30am this morning. We then took a cab to our hotel where we checked in and quickly showered before our orientation. At orientation we met our personal tour guide Marga, our professors both named Dr. G, and the rest of our student group. Since we had some free time before dinner, we spent the afternoon getting to know each other and shopping downtown. We then met up with our tour guide and took the metro to have dinner at a delicious local restaurant named My Way. Our tapas courses included mushroom risotto, salmon, and a brownie with ice cream dessert. To top it off we washed it all down with some tasteful champagne and white wine. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect first day!
